To spread reading culture more strongly
The director of Ho Chi Minh City Book Street Company Limited believes that the digital age poses a challenge to reading culture, but is not the root cause. In fact, even before the explosion of smartphones and social media, the reading rate among Vietnamese people was already low. According to Mr. Le Hoang, the key to a reading culture is forming a habit. Once this habit is established, the impacts of technology or the digital age will no longer be an obstacle.
Mr. Le Hoang believes that reading is a personal act, stemming from each individual's purpose, habits, and reading methods. "On a personal level, reading culture is composed of three core elements. First is the habit of reading, considered the most important factor. Second is reading with purpose and passion. When people read to learn, to develop themselves, and recognize the real value and benefits from books, they will gradually develop a love, inspiration, and motivation to read. Third is effective reading, meaning the reader must have reading skills, know how to take notes, systematize information, and extract lessons, values, and knowledge from the pages," he stated.

Discussing solutions for spreading a reading culture in the community, Mr. Le Hoang emphasized the need for joint efforts from families, schools, and society. According to him, forming a reading habit in children should begin early, from the moment they start school, with the important guiding role of parents and teachers. "If we don't form a reading habit from a young age, and only encourage reading when children are 14-15 years old, it will be very difficult," he said.
From there, Mr. Le Hoang put forward two proposals: the Ministry of Education and Training should establish a reading session in the main curriculum, and the Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism should consider including the building of family libraries as a criterion for building cultured families.
In addition, Mr. Le Hoang also offered suggestions to make books more accessible to students. He suggested that publishing formats should be reformed, not limited to physical books but also developing e-books and audiobooks to facilitate reader access anytime, anywhere. Furthermore, promotion, communication, and introduction of new books, as well as book review and experiential activities, should be strengthened to attract and spread a reading culture within the community.
