Chaotic scene at Russia's Makhachkala airport in the early morning of October 30

The Russian Interior Ministry said on October 30 that it had detained 60 people after hundreds of anti-Israel protesters stormed Makhachkala airport on October 29. A plane from Israel had just landed at the time.

The protesters searched for Israeli citizens on board the plane. Police quickly arrived at the airport to stop the crowd from getting too excited.

Is Ukraine behind anti-Semitic riots in Russia?

In a telephone press conference, Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov said the incident at Makhachkala airport had the intervention of foreign forces, but did not specify which forces Russia suspected.

"Last night (October 29) and this morning (October 30), President Vladimir Putin received reports on the situation in the Republic of Dagestan from the Russian Federal Security Service (FSB), the Russian Guard and the head of the Republic of Dagestan, Mr. Sergei Melikov," Sputnik News quoted Mr. Peskov.

Faced with the above situation, the Russian Federal Air Transport Agency announced the temporary closure of Makhachkala airport from October 29 to November 6.

TASS quoted Mr. Melikov as saying that those behind the airport riots were "enemies of Russia" and orchestrated everything from Ukraine.

President Putin is expected to hold a meeting with senior security advisers, including the defense minister and intelligence agency chiefs, to discuss "Western attempts to exploit the conflict in the Middle East to sow division in Russian society," according to spokesman Peskov.

Ukraine has not commented on Russia's accusations.
