Asked about the planned phone call, Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov said: "Yes, that's right. Such a telephone discussion was planned for March 18."

However, Mr. Peskov refused to reveal more about the content of the upcoming conversation between the two leaders, nor did he confirm whether the two sides would discuss a ceasefire in Ukraine.

Earlier in the day, President Trump said he planned to discuss ending the war in Ukraine with Mr. Putin, following "positive talks in Moscow between US special envoy Steve Witkoff and the Russian President.

In an effort to persuade President Putin to accept a 30-day ceasefire proposal being supported by the US and Ukraine, Mr. Trump said a lot of work had been done over the weekend regarding the conflict between Russia and Ukraine, and he believed Washington had a very good chance of ending the war in Ukraine.

The US leader added that there would be discussions on a number of concessions between Russia and Ukraine, including territory and power plants.

The most recent phone call between Mr. Putin and Mr. Trump took place on February 12. During the 1 hour and 30 minute conversation, the two leaders discussed the Ukraine issue as well as the remaining problems in the US-Russia relationship.

The Trump administration has proposed a 30-day ceasefire in Ukraine, which has received support from Kiev. Meanwhile, President Putin said Russia supports the idea of a ceasefire, but there are still some issues to be resolved, such as ensuring Russia's interests and who will monitor the ceasefire.

Moscow has repeatedly rejected plans for a temporary ceasefire, arguing that it would only give Ukraine more time to rearm before conflict flares up again.
