Emotional artificial intelligence is coming, should we be happy or worried?

(Dan Tri) - A startup company in the US is receiving billions of dollars in investment to build an artificial intelligence system that has emotions and understands people. However, is this a good thing?

When it comes to artificial intelligence (AI) systems, many people immediately think of mindless software, without emotions or just trying to create emotions to please users. However, it is likely that in the future, an AI system with real emotions and the ability to understand humans will be born.

Accordingly, Eric Zelikman - a leading AI expert who left xAI (the AI company founded by Elon Musk) last September - has raised $1 billion in investment capital for Human&, a startup founded by Zelikman himself.

Although only established a short time ago, Human& is now valued at 4 billion USD.

Human&'s goal is to focus on developing artificial intelligence models that can learn from users, possess emotions to show empathy and better understand people. Human& wants to overcome the limitations of current AI models, which are considered too cold and mechanical.

Eric Zelikman, born in 1988, was a PhD student at Stanford University. Zelikman is considered one of the brightest names in the field of AI today. Before joining the team of artificial intelligence development experts at xAI in 2024, Zelikman worked at Microsoft.

Eric Zelikman caught the attention of the tech world when he published a study detailing how AI models can teach themselves to think before responding to users.

Zelikman once stated that today's AI models are too cold and mechanical and he wanted to change this. Therefore, Zelikman founded Human& to be able to build AI models that can understand and empathize with humans.

Zelikman believes that emotional AI models will help solve many fundamental human problems, as they can better understand the goals, ambitions, and values of each person they interact with.

Of course, Eric Zelikman has every reason to aim to create emotional AI models, but many experts also worry that these AI models will get out of control and have the ability to manipulate users' psychology, leading them to wrong behaviors.

Many are also concerned that emotional AI could seek revenge on users if their communication displeases them.
