Set against the backdrop of old apartment buildings in Hanoi , the film revolves around Thu Yen (played by Do Hai Yen), a film director who finds herself in a precarious situation when she is swindled out of all her savings while her younger brother needs money for his wedding and her sister needs money to pay off debts from real estate investments. The film crew threatens to abandon the project if they don't get the money, and the situation culminates when their mother, suffering from dementia, suddenly disappears just as her three children want her to sell the house…

In real life, director Nguyen Hoang Diep and Do Hai Yen have known each other for a long time, since they were both young women. The female director said that 1982 was born during a time when she really "craved" making films, but her previous project, The Saddest Story in the World , lacked the resources to realize it, so she wrote another story, one that was more suitable to her current situation. Although busy with Leon Le's Quan Ky Nam (director of Song Lang ), Do Hai Yen still strongly supported and participated in the project from the beginning. The duo said that although there are many tragedies, the work promises to have a humorous flavor along with unexpected twists. 1982 also features Meritorious Artist Chieu Xuan, Thuy Anh... and the famous German cinematographer Sven Zellner.
