Immediately after the opening ceremony, the Cambodian sports delegation decided to withdraw entirely from the 33rd SEA Games, citing security concerns following the border conflict between them and Thailand.
Mr. Vath Chamroen, Secretary-General of the National Olympic Committee of Cambodia (NOCC), informed the Thai side of this decision. He also thanked the organizers for their utmost efforts to protect the neighboring athletes after the border conflict broke out.
But after returning to Cambodia, Mr. Chamroen sharply criticized the host country, Thailand. Specifically, the Khaosod newspaper quoted the NOCC Secretary-General as saying.
"No host country in the world has ever acted in such a way as Thailand has, contrary to Olympic principles."
The Olympic principle is that war must end before the games begin. Thailand has done everything contrary to international Olympic standards.
"In terms of sports, they welcomed us very warmly, everything was meticulously arranged. But their powerful figures attacked our home. How can we compete when that happens?" said Chamroen.
Furthermore, Mr. Chamroen also stated that Thailand's hosting of the 33rd SEA Games was far inferior to that of the 32nd SEA Games hosted by Cambodia.
"For a SEA Games of this magnitude, they didn't even have a rehearsal. We heard they lacked funding. All the officials came to apologize and said that the funding was insufficient."
"Anyone who watched the opening ceremony could clearly see that it was incomparable to the SEA Games hosted by Cambodia," Chamroen added.
