After the opening whistle, the New Zealand players proactively increased the pace of the game and played offensively. Coach Mai Duc Chung instructed the Vietnamese women's team to play a defensive counter-attacking game with a formation that wasn't too low.
New Zealand consistently launched attacks down both flanks, but they were unable to break through goalkeeper Kim Thanh in the opening minutes.
A surprise occurred in the 17th minute when, from a not-so-dangerous shot by Bott, Phuong Thao missed the ball, catching Kim Thanh by surprise and leaving her unable to make the save, allowing New Zealand to score.
After the goal, the home team continued their dominant style of play. Particularly towards the end of the first half, the New Zealand players repeatedly broke through the Vietnamese defense.
In the 44th minute, a teammate made a powerful breakthrough and passed the ball perfectly for Hand to double the lead.
With two goals in the first half, New Zealand played quite comfortably in the second half, no longer under pressure to score. The Vietnamese women's team played better in the second half, but only managed to avoid conceding more goals. In attack, the Vietnamese team never once troubled the home team.
With a 0-2 defeat, the Vietnamese national team suffered their second loss in their World Cup preparations. Coach Mai Duc Chung's team still has a friendly match against Spain (July 14th) before participating in the group stage of the 2023 World Cup.
