Germany warns Ukraine is running out of weapons

“Despite our support, Ukraine could soon face serious shortages of weapons and ammunition,” German Chancellor Olaf Scholz told the Wall Street Journal, calling on Western countries to continue supporting Kiev.

Mr. Scholz noted that if the West stopped supporting Ukraine, it would have serious consequences for Ukraine and “dramatically change the face of Europe.”

At the same time, the German chancellor stressed that the West must “do everything possible to prevent Russia from winning. Otherwise, we could face a world even more unstable, threatened and unpredictable than during the Cold War,” Mr. Scholz warned.

To achieve this goal, Mr. Scholz said, Western countries should maintain military support for Kiev and convince voters that helping Ukraine is a worthy cause. He added that the West should also ensure NATO’s collective defense.

However, the German Chancellor also affirmed that he did not want to get into a direct conflict with Russia and had no intention of confronting Russia.

Officials in Kiev have acknowledged serious ammunition problems, while the European Union's top diplomat, Joseph Borrell, admitted that by March 2024 the bloc would only be able to supply Ukraine with half of the 1 million rounds promised by early 2023.

Scholz’s comments also come after Ukraine’s counter-offensive in 2023 failed to make significant progress despite massive Western military support. According to Russian Defense Minister Sergey Shoigu, Ukraine lost 215,000 troops and 28,000 pieces of military equipment in 2023 alone.

Russia has criticized arms deliveries to Ukraine, warning that they will prolong the conflict and draw the West directly into the war.
