Ethiopian security forces said three people were killed and several others injured on June 2 in the capital Addis Ababa during clashes between police and Muslims after a prayer session.

These people clashed with police while protesting the demolition of mosques on the outskirts of Ethiopia's capital Addis Ababa to make way for an urban project.

Riot police were deployed near the al-Anouar mosque ahead of prayers, media reports said.

As the believers left the church, some people acted in a provocative manner that led to a fight.

Members of the Ethiopian Republican Guard, an elite unit responsible for protecting government institutions and individuals, were also present.

Police said about 65 police officers were injured, while clashes also caused extensive damage.

Last week, at the same al-Anouar mosque - a church located near the giant market called Merkato and close to the historic center of Addis Ababa - similar clashes after prayers also took place at the exit of the mosque, leaving 2 people dead, 56 injured and 114 arrested.

In Ethiopia, several mosques have been demolished in recent months on the outskirts of Addis Ababa, as part of a controversial urban project called Sheger City.

The project, which involves merging several municipalities in the Oromia region into a new megacity on the outskirts of the capital, has resulted in the demolition of many buildings including several mosques.
