Experts predict that, in the short term, coffee prices may continue to face downward pressure due to gradually improving supply from Vietnam and Brazil, along with profit-taking by speculative funds after a period of strong increases. However, demand from major markets such as Europe and the US remains high, providing impetus to stabilize coffee prices.
Amidst global trade tensions and the threat of increased tariffs, European consumers are concerned about the cost of living, particularly for popular morning beverages like coffee, tea, and cocoa.
Since the beginning of 2025, a wave of price increases has prompted many people to adjust their daily consumption habits. Coffee has emerged as one of the most significantly affected items, primarily due to climate change in major producing countries like Brazil and Vietnam.
According to Eurostat, in the first quarter of 2025 alone, the prices of coffee, tea, and cocoa in the EU increased by an average of 5.26%. Coffee prices alone rose by 1.81% from February to March, and by as much as 11.46% compared to the same period last year, indicating that the upward trend is still ongoing.
The coffee inventory situation on the market is currently showing contrasting trends. As of May 5th, ICE-monitored arabica coffee inventories rose to their highest level in two and a half months, reaching 832,133 bags, while robusta coffee inventories fell to their lowest level in four months, totaling only 4,225 lots last Wednesday.
In the first four months of 2025, Vietnam's coffee exports are estimated to reach US$3.78 billion, a 51.1% increase compared to the same period last year, mainly due to rising prices. The average export price of coffee during this period was US$5,698 per ton (including processed coffee such as roasted and instant coffee), a 67.5% increase compared to the same period last year.
