To achieve this, Gia Lai is promoting the development of coffee growing areas in a landscape-oriented direction, concentrating in areas with favorable conditions, combining coffee cultivation with the development of culture, tourism, and services... At the same time, it is reviewing coffee growing areas in unsuitable locations with low yields, especially in areas with difficulties in irrigation, to convert them to other crops with higher efficiency and economic value.

Gia Lai province is aiming for stable development of its coffee growing area to approximately 100,000 hectares (Photo: PV).

Notably, Gia Lai will prioritize the replanting of aging coffee plantations, using 100% high-yielding, high-quality, and disease-resistant coffee varieties. Intercropping with industrial crops and perennial fruit trees will be implemented in areas where coffee replanting is feasible.

In addition, the province will continue to effectively implement the plan for developing Vietnamese specialty coffee in the area. By 2030, the province aims for a specialty robusta coffee cultivation area of over 2,340 hectares and a production of 1,700 tons.

With sustainable development strategies, Gia Lai province strives to achieve, by 2030, over 80% of its coffee growing area meeting production standards (VietGAP, 4C, RA, FLO, CAFE Practices, Organic, etc.) and over 70% of its coffee growing area being granted planting area codes and product traceability. Simultaneously, the province commits to effectively implementing EUDR regulations on coffee industry development to combat forest degradation and deforestation. Accordingly, in the coming years, Gia Lai will focus on attracting investment in the deep processing of coffee products and developing its logistics system. The locality will support farmers and cooperatives to prioritize increasing the percentage of coffee harvested at the correct ripeness, meeting quality standards to 80-90%. Coffee beans must be ensured to be clean throughout all stages: harvesting, drying, processing, storage, and raw material supply... to improve the quality of coffee for export and domestic consumption.

Gia Lai will continue to encourage new investments and upgrade existing factories using modern technology in the processing of roasted and ground coffee and instant coffee. Simultaneously, it will increase investment in upgrading drying yards and drying machines for dry-processing coffee. Farmers will be encouraged to cooperate in coffee processing to ensure a sufficient supply of raw materials for subsequent processing stages.

Currently, coffee is the main crop of Gia Lai province, with an existing area of over 105,000 hectares spread across 10 districts and cities. Of this, nearly 60,000 hectares of coffee are produced according to VietGAP, 4C, and Organic standards.

Coffee grown in Gia Lai is mainly Robusta, with a yield of over 3.9 tons/ha and an annual production of over 400,000 tons. Gia Lai's coffee has been exported to 60 markets worldwide . In 2023, the value of Gia Lai's coffee exports reached over 490 million USD, primarily green coffee beans.

To further improve coffee quality and expand markets, businesses, cooperatives, and individuals in the province will promote the widespread application of water-saving irrigation techniques, windbreak planting, mulching, and landscape coffee cultivation; simultaneously, they will gradually apply mechanization to the harvesting and production of certified coffee.
