Rent is equal to a month's salary
A survey of some areas with a large student population and "university villages" near Ho Chi Minh City National University showed that rental prices range from 2.2 to 6 million VND/month, not including electricity, water and other services.
The price for renting a student room in Binh Quoi ward is up to 5.7 million VND/month, not including parking fee (180,000 VND/vehicle), service fee (120,000 VND/person), water (120,000 VND/person) and electricity (4,000 VND/kWh).
Meanwhile, room rates on Nguyen Xi Street are "softer", about 4.1 million VND/month, with a service fee of 200,000 VND/room.

The area near the University of Finance - Marketing and the University of Medicine and Pharmacy in Ho Chi Minh City also recorded high rental prices, averaging 4.4 million VND/room, not including additional costs.
In Go Vap ward, room rental prices range from 3-4 million VND/month, with common electricity fees ranging from 3,500-4,000 VND/kWh and water fees of 100,000 VND/person/month.
In Tan Thuan, Phu Thuan, Tan My wards, the rental price ranges from 3-6 million VND/month depending on the area and quality of the room. Near this area, in Cat Lai ward and Nha Be commune, Hiep Phuoc, the rental price is cheaper, ranging from 2.5 million VND/month or more.
In particular, the university village area, where many students gather, has the most attractive accommodation prices. Rooms on Nguyen Tri Phuong Street are only 2.2-2.5 million VND/month. This is considered an ideal choice for students with limited budgets.
With this rental price, the room price is equal to a month's basic salary of many parents.

Choose to stay far from the center to reduce financial burden
Many students get lost in the “matrix” of information on social networks, the pictures are beautiful, the prices are surprisingly cheap, but when they arrive, the place is cramped, rundown, and even occupied by someone else. The pressure increases as the number of affordable rooms is getting smaller, while landlords often require a quick deposit to “reserve the place”.
Caught up in the race to find accommodation, many students are confused and exhausted both physically and mentally, just hoping to quickly find a place to live to start the new school year.
Le Na, a student at the University of Social Sciences and Humanities, Ho Chi Minh City National University, said that in her first year of university, she spent nearly a week running around to find a place to stay. The room was cramped but the price was high.
In her second year, Na has more experience and proactively invited friends to look for suitable rooms. However, the situation this year is still not very optimistic when there are almost no rooms under 3 million VND left, not to mention many places add high parking and electricity and water fees. The total monthly rental cost can be up to 4-5 million VND.
Na shared: “Every time I move, it is stressful. Finding a suitable room is not easy. Many times, as soon as I get used to my old place, the price increases, the conditions are no longer good, so I have to move. Finding a new room takes a lot of time, money and energy.”
Faced with increasing cost pressures, many students have proactively chosen areas far from the city center to rent accommodation. Although the travel time may be longer, in return, the rent is cheaper, the area is quiet and still ensures basic amenities.
Student Ho Thuy Mai (20 years old, Quang Tri ), currently renting a room near Cat Lai port, said: "At first, I planned to rent a room near the school, but every room was 4-5 million/month. Coming to Cat Lai, it only costs nearly 3 million/month, the school is not far, but it reduces the financial burden, and the room is also nicer."
Not only choosing to live far away, many students also accept sharing a room to reduce costs. Thuy Trang (21 years old, Lam Dong ), a student renting a room in Di An, said: "My room costs 3.2 million VND/month, which has recently increased. I invited more friends to share a room to save on rent. It turns out that each person only spends more than 1.5 million VND/month, which is reasonable for a student like me."

According to Mr. Van Manh, a landlord in Di An, the peak period from August to November is when students look for accommodation the most.
“I renovated the room, added cabinets, fans... so the price increased slightly by about 200,000-300,000/room. But compared to the central area, the price here is still much more affordable,” he said.
In general, at the beginning of the peak season for renting rooms, room rental prices will be higher than usual.
Accommodation prices and service costs in big cities are still a big burden for students. In that context, choosing a suitable accommodation that both ensures living conditions and is affordable becomes a practical problem that every student must carefully calculate before each new school year.
