Participating in this tournament, military athletes have the opportunity to exchange experiences, practice skills, accumulate and improve their qualifications in organizing training and competitions, contributing to the overall development of high-performance sports in each country. Cultural and artistic exchange activities also help the military forces of each delegation understand more about the culture, country, people and hospitality of Vietnam, contributing to enhancing understanding and further strengthening the traditional good friendship and cooperation between the armies of countries in the ASEAN region.
The teams were divided into two groups, playing a round robin, with the top two teams from each group advancing to the semi-finals. Host Vietnam was in the same group as Laos and Cambodia, following a random draw, while the other group included the military teams of Indonesia, Malaysia, Myanmar and Thailand.
In the opening match, the Vietnam People's Army team - with the core of players from The Cong and Border Guard led by coach Tran Dinh Tien - won 3-0 (25-20, 25-16, 25-15) against the Cambodian Army team.
