At the Conference to honor typical and advanced women in implementing the patriotic emulation movement for the period 2020-2025, the Women's Union of Truong Long Tay commune, Can Tho city was honored to receive a certificate of merit from the Chairman of the People's Committee of Can Tho city. Over the past 5 years, with its dynamism and creativity, the Women's Union of the commune has implemented many practical activities to support members and women in economic development, stabilizing their lives, and building prosperous and happy families.

Water hyacinth weaving brings stable income to members and women in Truong Thuan hamlet, Truong Long Tay commune.

The water hyacinth weaving group in Truong Thuan hamlet, established in September 2024, is one of the effective economic models in the locality. Ms. Nguyen Thi Hong Tham, Head of the Women's Union of Truong Thuan hamlet, and head of the water hyacinth weaving group, said: "In 2023, I learned the craft of weaving water hyacinth and invited women living nearby to weave for me. Realizing that the work was both easy and made use of free time, helping women earn extra income, the Women's Union of the hamlet mobilized the establishment of a water hyacinth weaving group. The group currently has 11 members, with Kim Ngan Cooperative providing raw materials and purchasing products on-site."

Currently, members of the water hyacinth weaving group process two main products: round mats and water hyacinth basket bottom trays of different sizes. Processing prices range from 9,000-13,000 VND/product. In addition to the raw materials provided by Kim Ngan Cooperative, members can actively cut and dry water hyacinth to make raw materials, earning extra income in addition to the product processing fees.

Ms. Doan Thi Men in Truong Thuan hamlet shared: “When I first started weaving water hyacinth, I could only make one carpet a day. Now I am used to it, it only takes me 40 minutes to weave one carpet. On average, I can weave 15-16 carpets a day, earning 2-3 million VND/month.”

Ms. Le Ngoc Huyen in Truong Thuan hamlet has just joined the Water Hyacinth Weaving Group about 2 months ago. Ms. Huyen said: “Before, I stayed at home to take care of housework. Seeing that the women near my house were weaving water hyacinth and had a stable income, I took advantage of my spare time to learn the craft and take on weaving jobs. Now, every day, I can weave 8-9 rugs and still take good care of my family.”

In addition to the water hyacinth weaving group in Truong Thuan hamlet, the Women's Union of Truong Long Tay commune maintains many effective economic models, such as: clean vegetable growing cooperative group; straw mushroom growing cooperative group in greenhouses; raising wild boar, turtle... According to Ms. Pham Thi Ngoan, President of the Women's Union of Truong Long Tay commune, in recent years, the Women's Union of the commune has always paid attention to supporting women in economic development. From reviewing the production development needs of members, the Union has developed appropriate support plans and solutions. The Union creates favorable conditions for women to start businesses; support loans; coordinate the organization of training courses, transfer of cultivation and livestock techniques... Currently, the Women's Union of the commune is maintaining the activities of 4 capital contribution groups, with 85 members participating; 16 savings and loan groups from the Social Policy Bank, helping over 715 members borrow capital to develop their family economy, with a total outstanding debt of over 30 billion VND.

In addition, the Commune Women's Union focuses on implementing social security work. Over the past 5 years, the Commune Women's Union has maintained the "Godmother" program, supporting and raising 2 orphans; implemented the "Going to school with children" model and the "Millions of gifts to share love" program, mobilizing nearly 60 scholarships and more than 1,380 gifts for children in difficult circumstances... The Commune Women's Union is interested in organizing extensive and practical emulation movements, mobilizing women of all walks of life to actively participate. Notably, the movement "Women actively study, work creatively, build happy families"; the campaign to build families of 5 no's, 3 clean's, 5 yes's, 4 clean's... has been deployed by the Commune Women's Union to 100% of branches and groups in many suitable forms.

Ms. Pham Thi Ngoan, President of the Women's Union of Truong Long Tay Commune, informed: "After the merger, the Women's Union of the commune is currently managing 36 branches and women's groups, with 2,734 members. The Women's Union of the commune will continue to innovate the content and methods of operation; improve the quality and expand the types of gatherings, attract members; implement practical activities, especially taking advantage of social networks, applying information technology in connecting, helping members develop the economy, stabilize their lives, build prosperous and happy families".
