This is a play by author Phan Vu, adapted into Cai Luong (Vietnamese traditional opera) by Ngo Linh, performed by experienced artists including Meritorious Artist Hoang Khanh, Hong Giang, Le Duy, Phuong Anh and Kim Ngan.

The play is set against the backdrop of our nation's struggle against the American invasion, revolving around a family in a town near an enemy-controlled area. The father, Tran Trung Chanh, joined the revolution, and after years of separation, returns home to find his wife blinded by the enemy. Even more ironically, their son, Tran Trung Hieu, grows up on the other side of the battlefield, pointing his gun at his compatriots. With a vow to serve the nation, armed with the family's ancestral sword, and with the love and faith of his parents, the son returns… This is also the happy ending that opens the play: a family reunited during the first Tet holiday after national reunification.

Here are some scenes from the play:

The blind mother heard her son coming home.

Mother and son were reunited after Tran Trung Hieu returned from re-education and rehabilitation.

The roles of Mr. and Mrs. Tran Trung Chanh are played by Meritorious Artist Hoang Khanh and Hong Giang.

Father and son were on opposite sides of the battle lines; the father was a revolutionary cadre, and the son was a captain in the South Vietnamese army.

Actress Phuong Anh's impressive performance as a lieutenant colonel in the South Vietnamese army showcased her cunning, devious, and malicious nature.

A beautiful ending image from the play "The Mother and the Sword".
