When AI is abused
Mr. Vu Minh Duc, Director of the Department of Teachers and Educational Managers, Ministry of Education and Training, emphasized that artificial intelligence (AI) is no longer a distant concept. It has, is, and will continue to change the way we teach and learn, the way students access knowledge, and the way educational managers make policies.
AI offers enormous opportunities for personalizing learning, enhancing engagement, supporting teaching, assessment, and more effective education administration. At the same time, it also poses many new challenges in ethics, law, application capacity, and especially fairness in access to technology.
According to Associate Professor Dr. Nguyen Chi Thanh, University of Education, Vietnam National University, Hanoi, when an AI tool is born, designers hope that the product will be useful, honest, and not have a negative impact on users. In Vietnam, about 15% of schools in big cities have deployed AI applications in education, about 25% in Hanoi and about 30% in Ho Chi Minh City. The most popular subjects applying AI are Math, English, Science and Information Technology.
However, in reality, besides the positive impacts of AI, there may be adverse effects if AI is not used properly, in which users who rely too much on AI may become “digital slaves”. There is a risk of eliminating important qualities in the 2018 general education program such as problem-solving and creativity; communication and cooperation skills, autonomy and self-study skills...
For teachers, relying too much on AI to prepare lessons, instead of designing and adjusting them themselves, will reduce their initiative; reduce their ability to evaluate when they rely too much on AI to grade and evaluate students, ignoring other important factors.
Teachers need to follow ethical rules when using AI
Currently, 60% of teachers have not attended AI training courses. Associate Professor Dr. Tran Thanh Nam, Vice Principal of the University of Education, Vietnam National University, Hanoi, said that the school has begun to guide and train teachers to start applying AI in teaching and concerns have arisen.
After a period of application, teachers are struggling with how to take advantage of AI without making students lazy to think and tend to depend too much on AI. Even students believe absolutely in the knowledge that AI brings, without cross-checking information sources. While in theory, there may still be AI illusions or inaccurate prejudices.
In fact, in many tests, teachers cannot assess which part is the students' knowledge and which part is the knowledge of the algorithms (AI). Teachers become more confused and do not know whether the students have achieved the competencies that meet the requirements according to the output standards of the subject or not.
There are AIs that teachers can use just one command to create a whole set of exercises for a whole day of class. In the digital age and artificial intelligence, teachers will not only focus on designing teaching but also have to shift to designing learning, creating an interesting learning environment for students and promoting lifelong learning.
Therefore, according to Associate Professor Dr. Tran Thanh Nam, teachers must comply with ethical rules, ensure student safety when using AI tools, and be responsible in using AI. Use AI to encourage critical thinking, solve complex problems and be creative in teaching. Teachers need to continuously learn, develop skills and knowledge about AI to adapt to changes in technology and education.
With the aim of promoting educational innovation through AI and contributing to the development of Vietnamese education, the Ministry of Education and Training and RMIT University Vietnam will jointly organize the National Forum on Educational Innovation with Artificial Intelligence in 2025 and 2026.
After the launching ceremony on April 9, activities taking place in 2025 include: Workshop on the current implementation of AI applications in education, current status and solutions; Specialized training program on AI applications in teaching and learning; National online training; Direct training for managers and key teachers of preschool and general education; Direct training combined with online training exclusively for managers and key lecturers of universities; National Competition on AI Applications in Education; Vietnam Education Festival on AI innovation.
Mr. Vu Minh Duc said that the Ministry of Education and Training will continue to play a creative, leading and accompanying role in building policies, legal frameworks and creating favorable conditions for AI to be applied effectively, sustainably and humanely in education.
