DNVN - Grab has selected AWS as its preferred cloud provider to pursue a technology-first strategy, driving growth in passenger transportation, delivery and financial services, including new digital banking services.
Powered by the AWS cloud, Grab currently serves 41.9 million monthly active customers and over 13 million drivers and delivery partners on its platform. Every second, Grab completes over a hundred transactions, receives over 500,000 GPS location and service requests, and processes over 50,000 ETA requests.
AWS ensures capacity for Grab’s critical compute, storage, networking, and database functions. With the agility, security, and stability of the AWS cloud, Grab has been able to accelerate innovation, rapidly launch new services, and scale efficiently across Cambodia, Indonesia, Malaysia, Myanmar, the Philippines, Singapore, Thailand, and Vietnam.
To strike a balance between growth and costs, Grab has used AWS cloud services for most of its operations in Southeast Asia, including transportation, delivery, and financial services, including digital banks in Indonesia, Malaysia, and Singapore. Using AWS cloud solutions not only helps Grab increase agility but also reduces operational costs. Grab uses AWS Clean Rooms analytics, which allows it to consolidate data from different units and affiliates in a secure and private manner.
Furthermore, Grab also leveraged AWS's dedicated databases and migrated over 400 back-end service applications from traditional virtual servers to AWS Graviton2 processors, boosting performance and improving cost and energy efficiency.
In Q3 2024, Grab’s on-demand transactions grew by 22%. To meet the growing demand for its services, Grab uses Amazon Relational Database Service (Amazon RDS) combined with Amazon DynamoDB as its transaction database. These services ensure high availability, scalability, and adaptability of the platform, enhancing the customer experience through accurate data search.
With AWS, Grab can easily and flexibly adjust resources according to user needs, quickly responding to sudden surges in demand during peak periods such as holiday sales, ensuring transactions on the super app run smoothly. Conversely, during off-peak periods, the system will automatically adjust resources to save costs.
“With AWS’s advanced technology, Grab is able to deliver personalized, seamless transactions to millions of users,” said Jeff Johnson, General Manager of AWS ASEAN. “AWS helps Grab optimize costs, increase operational efficiency, and continuously develop diverse data-driven services, ensuring Grab remains at the forefront of innovation in the digital economy .”
