In recent years, air pollution in the capital has often appeared at this time of year to the point that many people jokingly say that Hanoi has an additional air pollution season. The air pollution season usually starts from November to April of the following year. The reason is explained that the pollution situation is combined with unfavorable weather factors in winter and spring.
Not only due to adverse weather factors. The underlying cause is still waste sources from human activities such as industry, traffic, burning of agricultural by-products, burning of household waste and dust from construction activities.
In recent times, Hanoi has implemented a number of short-term and long-term measures to cope with the increasingly serious air pollution situation: such as planting more trees, watering the streets, and gradually converting public transport to electric vehicles. Recently, the City People's Council passed a resolution on low-emission zones with a notable provision: from July 1, 2026, gasoline-powered motorbikes will be banned according to time frames/points or areas, piloted in some areas within Ring Road 1.
Air quality cannot be improved overnight, but clearly, it takes determination to start taking action now to make a change.
