Amidst the hustle and bustle of Hanoi , the ancient villages in the suburbs and outskirts still quietly preserve their timeless beauty. These are ideal destinations to find ancient spaces with banyan trees, wells, communal houses, and hundreds of years old architectural works, bringing a completely different experience compared to the city center.

Unique ancient villages around Hanoi

Each village has its own story and architecture, from unique laterite walls to ancient French-style villas, creating an exciting journey of discovery .

1. Duong Lam ancient village, Son Tay

Dubbed the "land of two kings", Duong Lam is one of the most famous and attractive ancient villages. Located about 40km from the center of Hanoi, this place still preserves almost intact the structure of an ancient Vietnamese village with village gate, banyan tree, well, communal house yard and small brick-paved alleys. Visitors can spend the whole day exploring Mong Phu communal house, Giang Van Minh Temple, and visiting ancient houses hundreds of years old.

2. Cu Da ancient village, Thanh Oai

About 20km from Hanoi, Cu Da impresses with its unique architectural fusion between traditional Northern villages and early 20th-century French style. Along with the ancient three-room and five-room houses are elaborately built villas. This village is not only a living architectural museum but also famous for its traditional vermicelli making.

3. Cuu Village, Phu Xuyen

With a history of more than 500 years, Cuu village has a quiet and somewhat nostalgic beauty. The characteristic of the village is the houses combining Vietnamese and French architecture, half rustic and half urban. Small alleys paved with green stone, moss-covered village gates and walls stained with time create a quiet space, separate from the outside world .

4. Dong Ngac Village, Bac Tu Liem

Located right on the banks of the Red River, at the foot of Thang Long Bridge, Dong Ngac is one of the few remaining ancient villages in the heart of the city. Despite strong urbanization, the village still retains many ancient architectural works such as communal houses, pagodas, and elaborately built ancient houses. Dong Ngac is also known for its traditional products such as Chem sausage and Ve sausage.

5. Yen Truong Village, Chuong My

Yen Truong Village is a lesser-known destination but possesses the rustic beauty typical of Northern villages. The highlight of the village is the walls and gates built entirely of dark yellow laterite. According to locals, the village is associated with historical relics from the time of Hai Ba Trung, carrying with it long-standing stories.

6. Uoc Le Village, Thanh Oai

Not only famous for its famous ham making craft, Uoc Le village is also a beautiful ancient village with a majestic village gate, a market and a communal house that still retains its old appearance. This is an ideal place for those looking for a peaceful space, free from dust and noise to relax on the weekend.

7. Nom Village, Hung Yen

Although located in Hung Yen province, Nom village is only about 30km from Hanoi, making it a great choice for a day trip. Passing through the village gate, visitors will encounter a peaceful space with green bamboo groves, banyan trees, wells and red-tiled houses. The highlight here is the ancient stone Nom bridge across Nguyet Duc river and the Nom market with its unique architecture.

To make your trip to explore the ancient villages complete, you should note the following points:

  • Getting around: Motorbikes are the most flexible option for moving between villages and exploring backstreets. Check and fill up as gas stations in the suburbs can be few and far between.
  • Time to visit: Should go on weekdays to avoid crowds. Autumn is the most ideal time with cool, pleasant weather.
  • Dress: Choose comfortable, polite clothing, especially when visiting historical sites such as temples and pagodas.
  • Respect the locals: The ancient villages are still inhabited. Please be respectful, keep quiet and only take photos in public areas or with the homeowner's permission.
