Hanoi has just been honored by Time Out magazine in the list of 20 friendliest cities in the world in 2025, holding the 11th position. This is a remarkable recognition, reflecting not only the cultural and historical beauty but also the warmth and hospitality of the people of the capital.

The ranking was released after a large-scale survey of 18,500 residents around the world, in which they were asked to rate the level of friendliness and hospitality in their home countries.

Hanoi in global rankings

Hanoi is one of two Southeast Asian representatives on this year’s list, along with Chiang Mai, Thailand (ranked 16th). This inclusion affirms the region’s appeal to international visitors, where a warm welcome is an important part of the travel experience.

Topping the list is Porto, Portugal, a city that 85% of locals described as having good neighbors. Second and third place went to Bilbao, Spain, and Medellin, Colombia, respectively. The ranking also noted the presence of other Asian cities such as Abu Dhabi and Dubai, UAE.

What makes the capital friendly?

The friendliness of Hanoi is not just a number on a ranking, but something that visitors can clearly feel in every street corner. It is the smile of a street vendor, the enthusiasm of a passerby giving directions, or the open atmosphere at sidewalk tea shops, where people can easily strike up a conversation with each other.

The unique community culture, reflected in the rhythm of life in the small alleys of the Old Quarter, creates an intimate space where visitors can mingle and feel the sincerity of the local people.

Time Out's rating method

To compile the list, Time Out surveyed residents in cities around the world. The main criteria was how well people described their hometown as "welcoming and friendly".

The survey also provides insights into other factors such as green space, arts, culture and people's happiness levels, which contribute to a comprehensive picture of the quality of life and experiences in the world's 50 best cities.

Suggestions for experiencing Hanoi's hospitality

To fully experience the friendliness that has made Hanoi famous, visitors can try these simple but meaningful activities:

  • Take a walk around Hoan Kiem Lake in the early morning, observe and chat with locals exercising.
  • Explore the Old Quarter, not only on the main streets but also through the small alleys to see the rhythm of everyday life.
  • Enjoy street food and listen to interesting stories from the shop owners.
  • Sit in a coffee shop, slowly watch people passing by and feel the peace of the city.

The recognition from Time Out once again affirms that Hanoi is not only a destination rich in history and cuisine, but also a warm place that always welcomes international friends.
