Hanoi will 'finalize' a solution to the problem of blurred 10th grade exam questions causing confusion among candidates

Following verification and investigation, representatives from the Hanoi Department of Education and Training have announced that they plan to handle the case of the blurry 10th-grade math exam that caused misunderstanding among students later this afternoon, with the aim of ensuring maximum fairness and protecting the rights of all students.

On the morning of the same day, about 30 parents of students came to the Hanoi Department of Education and Training to submit a petition regarding the incident yesterday (June 11th) where the math exam for admission to public high schools was printed blurry, leading to candidates making mistakes (the dash was broken in the fraction 2/x-3, causing candidates to interpret it as -(2/x-3)).

Parents point out a printing error in the 10th grade math exam.

Mr. Tran Manh Tung, a math teacher in Hanoi, frankly stated that the primary reason for the confusion regarding the signs in the Hanoi 10th-grade math exam was the students' own fault. If they had read the question carefully, they would have seen that the numerator and denominator should be centered between the horizontal line, but they didn't observe the question closely enough and made the mistake.

The second error lies with the exam printing department. Typically, for the Hanoi 10th grade entrance exam, the exam papers are printed in clusters of 5-10 schools in the area. According to regulations, after printing the sample, the person in charge must check it once to avoid errors before pressing the mass printing button.

Removing this question would mean losing 2 points from the total score for admission to 10th grade this year (Mathematics score is weighted by a factor of 2). Meanwhile, a difference of just half a point can determine whether a student passes or fails, so the frustration of students and parents is understandable.

"To avoid disadvantaging candidates, the Department of Education and Training should organize grading using both plus and minus signs. Candidates who provide the correct answer will still be graded as usual. Regardless of the question, the candidate's ability will still be assessed," Mr. Tung said.

Sharing the same opinion, Mr. Nguyen Viet Tien, a math teacher at Xuan Son Secondary School in Son Tay town, Hanoi, said that in part 1 of question 3, the hyphens in the fraction were blurred, causing misunderstanding that they were minus signs "-", and that this incident occurred in some examination centers, not throughout the city.

To ensure the rights of the candidates, the Department of Education and Training needs to quickly verify the situation and propose the best solution. “If a candidate is unable to answer the question, they should receive no points or only points for what they answered correctly. If a candidate misunderstood the question but answered correctly, they should still receive the maximum score. The Department of Education and Training needs to find the most reasonable and fair solution for the students, as this is a very competitive exam that attracts the attention of candidates, parents, and society,” Mr. Tien suggested.

Previously, immediately after students completed the Math exam – the final subject for admission to public high schools – yesterday afternoon (June 11th), many parents and students expressed their frustration regarding the blurry and poorly printed Math exam paper, which caused misunderstandings and led to incorrect answers and lost points.

In question 3, part 1 required students to solve an equation. Due to unclear printing, the dashed line was broken, causing students to mistakenly interpret it as -2. This issue was reported at several exam locations, including Tran Dang Ninh Secondary School, Nguyen Van Cu High School, Yen Thuong Secondary School, Duong Xa High School, Dan Phuong High School, and Quang Trung High School - Dong Da.

The exam paper had a faded section where the dashed line was mistaken for a minus sign (left), while the standard exam paper (right) was misread. This information was quickly shared on many education forums. This morning (June 12th), many parents came to the Department of Education and Training to complain about the incident.
