Hanoi commemorates victims of mini-apartment building fire.

At 8:00 AM on September 18th, at offices, schools, civil servants, and students observed a minute of silence in memory of the victims who died in the mini-apartment building fire in Thanh Xuan district.

Traditionally, on Monday mornings, offices and schools hold flag-raising ceremonies and sing the national anthem. However, today, after the ceremony, civil servants, employees, and students will observe a minute of silence in memory of the victims who died in the fire at the mini-apartment building at 37 Alley 29/70, Khuong Ha Street, Khuong Dinh Ward, Thanh Xuan District.

In Thanh Xuan District, the District Party Committee, People's Council, People's Committee, Fatherland Front, and socio -political organizations will participate in the commemoration at the large hall in the district headquarters. Agencies, units, and the 11 wards will hold internal ceremonies at their offices or other locations suitable to their circumstances. Some schools have reminded students to wear white shirts for the school's moment of silence.

According to Tran The Cuong, Director of the Department of Education and Training, after this morning's flag-raising ceremony, schools and departments will observe a minute of silence for the victims, followed by fundraising. The Department's leaders will observe a moment of silence at their offices.

On September 14th, a day after the fire, the education sector launched a fundraising campaign, collecting 179 million VND. The donated money will be transferred to the victims who are receiving treatment and to support funeral arrangements for the students.

Mr. Pham Gia Huu, Head of the Education and Training Department of Thanh Xuan District, said that at Khuong Dinh Primary and Secondary Schools, the memorial ceremony was also brief, beginning with the principal's sharing about the purpose and meaning of the ceremony, followed by a moment of silence and some notes on how to handle a fire.

"The message should be light and concise so that the school can continue teaching and learning, avoiding anything too heavy that could negatively impact students' psychology," Mr. Huu said.

On the night of September 12th and early morning of September 13th, a 10-story mini-apartment building with 45 apartments in Khuong Dinh ward, Thanh Xuan district, caught fire, resulting in 56 deaths and 37 injuries. Among the 29 students involved in the accident, 13 died (2 kindergarteners, 5 primary school students, and 6 secondary school students), while the rest are receiving treatment at the hospital.

In a directive dated September 15th, Prime Minister Pham Minh Chinh assessed the fire as "exceptionally serious." He instructed the Ministry of Public Security to conduct a comprehensive inspection of fire safety measures in densely populated residential buildings prone to fires and explosions, in order to assess the current situation and propose solutions. This work is to be completed before November 15th.
