Two top engineering schools announce major changes in 2026 university admissions

Two top technical schools have adjusted their 2026 university admission methods, tightening math and physics entrance standards, eliminating consideration of candidates who won science and technology awards, and reducing consideration of academic records.

Hanoi University of Science and Technology and University of Technology (Vietnam National University, Hanoi) have just announced the expected university admission method for 2026 (full-time) with many notable adjustments.

Expected to abandon complex D01, B00

Speaking to Tuoi Tre Online on October 28, Prof. Dr. Chu Duc Trinh - Principal of the University of Technology (Hanoi National University) - said that in 2026, the school plans to enroll 4,020 students with three methods: direct admission, high school graduation exam scores, and SAT scores.

Notably, with the direct admission method, the school will follow the regulations of the Ministry of Education and Training , but will not consider candidates who have won national and international science and technology awards.

The school will focus on direct admission of national and international excellent students in math, physics, and chemistry into all majors. In particular, biotechnology and agricultural technology will also directly admit biology students.

"When enrolling students, the school pays great attention to the input knowledge to meet the learning requirements upon admission. Input knowledge of natural sciences includes math, physics and English.

"Knowledge and skills related to scientific research are the knowledge that the school will train during the learning process. The school does not consider this knowledge as important input knowledge," Mr. Trinh explained the decision to remove direct admission to science and technology awards for the 2026 admission season.

With the method of considering high school graduation exam scores, the University of Technology also plans to adjust to focus on admission with only 4 groups, including A00 (math, physics, chemistry), A01 (math, physics, English) and X06 (math, physics, IT); the two majors of biotechnology and agricultural technology will add group A02 (math, physics, biology).

Thus, compared to last year, the combination D01 (math, literature, English), B00 (math, chemistry, biology), X26 (math, English, IT) has been removed from the university entrance exam combination in 2026 of the school.

Explaining the change in admission combinations, Mr. Trinh said that this year the school only focuses on enrolling students with the most basic combinations, with the foundation being math and physics.

"Through the survey process, the school found that students entering the school to study well need to have good knowledge of math, physics, including biotechnology and agricultural technology. Analyzing training in the past 10 years, students who were admitted with a combination of math - physics - chemistry, math - physics - English, are the group with the best academic results," said Mr. Trinh.

Meanwhile, Hanoi University of Science and Technology said that in 2026 it plans to enroll 9,880 students, maintaining three stable methods, including talent selection, TSA thinking assessment test scores, and high school graduation exam scores.

With the talent selection method, Hanoi University of Science and Technology considers three aspects: direct admission of excellent students according to the regulations of the Ministry of Education and Training; admission based on international certificates SAT, ACT, A-Level, AP, IB; admission based on capacity profile combined with interview.

Notably, with the admission based on capacity records combined with interviews, the scoring formula has changed compared to last year, the academic transcript score has been replaced by the thinking assessment test score.

Profile score = Thinking score (maximum 40) + achievement score (maximum 50) + bonus points (maximum 10).

With the method of considering high school graduation exam scores in 2026, the University of Technology will keep the same 11 admission combinations and main subjects as previous years, including: A00, A01, A02, B00, D01, D04, D07, D26, D28, D29 and K01.
