Da Nang At least two tons of dead fish in Phu Loc River and Trung Nghia 1 Lake were picked up and taken to Khanh Son landfill for disposal after the first rain of the season.
Many canals and lakes in Thanh Khe and Lien Chieu districts are experiencing dead fish, scum and foul odor in the water. On July 15, the Da Nang Drainage and Wastewater Treatment Company scooped nearly 500 kg of white-bellied fish from Phu Loc River, Thanh Khe District; on July 17, they scooped more than 1.5 tons from Trung Nghia 1 Lake, Lien Chieu District.
On July 19, dead fish were scattered in Da Co canal, near Chon Tam 6 street, Lien Chieu district, with about 50 kg, mainly tilapia.

Mr. Huynh Trung Nhan, Deputy Director of Da Nang Drainage and Wastewater Treatment Company, said that the company had sent staff to check the entire route but did not detect any illegal discharge. The fish deaths could be due to the low water level in the canals and lakes during the hot season, reducing the oxygen concentration in the water. On July 15-16, Da Nang had heavy rain, rainwater and wastewater exceeding the overflow thresholds entered the lakes and canals through the discharge gates, causing sudden changes in the water environment.
Explaining the green scum appearing in many canals, a company representative said it was due to the growth of blue-green algae. Workers have now collected the blue-green algae and chemically treated the areas where fish died to improve the landscape.

The company also took water samples in the above areas for analysis and assessment of specific causes, and closely monitored the changes in water quality in canals, rivers and lakes in the area.
