Harry and Meghan's spokesman said the two were chased by New York paparazzi, nearly had an accident and endangered people on the road.

"Last night, the Duke and Duchess of Sussex and their mother, Ms. Ragland, were dangerously pursued by aggressive paparazzi," a spokesman for the Harry - Meghan family said in a statement today about the incident that occurred on the evening of May 16.

The spokesman said the pursuit through New York City lasted nearly two hours, nearly causing collisions with other vehicles, pedestrians and two police officers.

A source close to Harry and Meghan said that about six cars were following the couple's car and the chase could have resulted in a fatal accident. Harry and Meghan were in New York at the time to attend an awards ceremony.

Harry's relationship with the media has long been strained. He blames the media's intrusion on his personal life for the death of his mother, Princess Diana, who died in a car crash in Paris in 1997 while fleeing paparazzi.

Harry and his wife left the British royal family in 2020 and moved to the US. The Duke and Duchess of Sussex make money through book publishing contracts and making documentaries. Harry's memoir Spare, published earlier this year, revealed a lot of information about British royal life, focusing on the conflict between Harry and his brother William.

Harry returned to the UK this month for the coronation of King Charles III. However, he only attended the main ceremony at Westminster Abbey, not the official reception and photo op at Buckingham Palace with the royals. He quickly returned to the US to celebrate his 4-year-old son's birthday.
