Manager Amorim acknowledged the situation at MU: "I'm facing a lot of problems, my job here is very, very difficult. But I still hold onto my belief. I'm not worried about the future. I hate losing, that's the worst feeling."
According to the English press, manager Amorim will be sacked if he fails to halt Manchester United's downward spiral in February.
Manchester United faced Tottenham amidst significant squad changes, with as many as seven key players injured. Most notably, rising star Amad Diallo was out for the rest of the season. Other key players such as center-back Lisandro Martinez, midfielders Manuel Ugarte, Kobbie Mainoo, Luke Shaw, Mason Mount, and Jonny Evans were also absent for extended periods.
These absences forced MU to make do with a patched-up squad and display a lackluster performance, allowing Tottenham to win 1-0 thanks to an early goal from Maddison in the 13th minute.
The defeat saw MU drop to 15th place with 29 points after 25 matches. Although they are still 12 points ahead of relegation-threatened Ipswich Town, if they cannot stop this downward spiral, Manchester United could very well fall into the relegation zone.
Manchester United's form in the Premier League has been terrible since mid-December last year, with only 2 wins, 1 draw, and 6 losses. In February, MU still has two matches against bottom-of-the-table teams: Everton and Ipswich Town. Everton, currently in a miraculous recovery under manager David Moyes, have overtaken MU with 30 points compared to MU's 29. In March, MU will face Arsenal and Leicester City. This is a series of matches where MU needs to win at least 3 out of 4 games to escape their current slump.
According to predictions from the British press, manager Amorim's future will be decided in the remaining two matches of February. If Manchester United fail to win against Everton and Ipswich Town, the Portuguese coach will almost certainly face dismissal.
MU will have to find a way to avoid the disaster of relegation, something unprecedented in the club's history, despite still having a chance to win the FA Cup or Europa League.
Meanwhile, Liverpool beat Wolverhampton 2-1 to re-establish a 7-point lead over second-placed Arsenal (60 compared to 53), putting them well on track to win the championship.
