Following reports of a sharp increase in electricity bills in August this year in some localities in the North and Central regions, Vietnam Electricity Group (EVN) announced that it has directed its electricity corporations to review and address the issue.
EVN stated that it currently manages and sells electricity to over 31 million residential customers, of which 3.2 million customers (approximately 10%) consumed more than 30% more electricity in August.
The corporation stated that in August, especially during the first half of the month, many areas in the North experienced a period of intense heat, leading to a significant increase in electricity consumption. In fact, on August 4th, electricity consumption in the North reached a record high.
EVN, citing data from customer service centers of electricity corporations and monitoring feedback on social media, said that to date there have been over 500 customer complaints about high electricity bills in August.
According to statistics from the Northern Power Corporation, in August, the hotline recorded 171,723 calls, of which 150,387 were answered (87.58%).
The power company stated that the number of calls is higher during hot weather, so customer calls may not be received promptly during these times.

Following an initial review of the information regarding the high electricity bills for August, EVN stated that no errors have been found and that the specific review and verification of the reported issues are still ongoing.
Regarding social media posts reflecting on electricity bills, EVN stated that many posts or group posts lacked specific customer information verification, making it impossible for the company to ascertain the authenticity of the information. Furthermore, some of the information was false or posted solely to attract views or boost online sales.
According to EVN's statistics, there are many reported cases where customers do not purchase electricity directly from the corporation but rather from wholesale and retail electricity organizations.
These organizations still use mechanical meters, requiring manual data entry, and therefore still face a higher risk of errors compared to electronic meters in terms of incorrect meter readings. According to preliminary statistics, there are currently 521 organizations buying and selling electricity wholesale and retail nationwide, with 481 of them located in the northern region alone.
For EVN's electricity customers, electronic meters have now been installed in most cases. The installation of electronic meters and remote reading eliminates the need for manual data entry as was the case with mechanical meters. This significantly reduces errors because data is updated automatically, and there is no human interference with the readings.
