Apple has officially released iOS 26 – the next major software update for the iPhone. As usual, not all devices will have the chance to experience the new operating system, as some older models have been removed from the support list.
Three iPhone models officially "say goodbye" to iOS 26
While last year's iOS 18 still supported all devices running iOS 17, Apple has narrowed the compatibility range with iOS 26. The following three iPhone models will not be able to upgrade:
iPhone XS
iPhone XS Max
iPhone XR
This means that, after many years of companionship, these devices have officially stopped at iOS 18 and cannot experience new improvements from Apple.
List of iPhones supported iOS 26
Compatible iPhone models with iOS 26 range from the iPhone 11 series to the newly released iPhone 17, along with the 2nd generation SE and later. Specifically:
iPhone 17, iPhone Air, iPhone 17 Pro, iPhone 17 Pro Max
iPhone 16e, iPhone 16/16 Plus, iPhone 16 Pro/16 Pro Max
iPhone 15/15 Plus, iPhone 15 Pro/15 Pro Max
iPhone 14/14 Plus, iPhone 14 Pro/14 Pro Max
iPhone 13/13 mini, iPhone 13 Pro/13 Pro Max
iPhone 12/12 mini, iPhone 12 Pro/12 Pro Max
iPhone 11, iPhone 11 Pro, iPhone 11 Pro Max
iPhone SE (2nd generation or later)
Thus, users still have quite a few device options to experience the new update.
Not all devices have all the new features
It's worth noting that even if they're on the supported list, not all iPhone models will get the full features of iOS 26. More than 20 new Apple Intelligence features — including many advanced AI tools — are only available on the iPhone 15 Pro and later.
This shows that Apple continues to maintain its strategy of encouraging users to upgrade to newer devices, so that they can take full advantage of the hardware and software power.
Should I upgrade?
With three older models removed from the update ecosystem, iOS 26 is both a big step forward in features and a signal to users to upgrade their devices. If you own an iPhone 15 Pro or newer, the iOS 26 experience will be more complete thanks to the full integration of Apple Intelligence.
For those using older iPhone models, iOS 26 still brings significant performance and security improvements, but won't be able to fully exploit the new AI features.
