Mark Wiens is a popular food blogger from the United States. He currently has a Facebook page with 6 million followers and a personal YouTube channel with over 10 million subscribers.
With a passion for travel and culinary exploration, Mark Wiens has visited dozens of countries across continents, experiencing unique and delicious dishes in various regions. In Southeast Asia, Vietnam and Thailand are the two countries Mark has visited most often. He is particularly impressed with the rich culinary scene in Vietnam, with its many delicious dishes at affordable prices.
During his most recent trip to Vietnam, Mark visited Hanoi . He admitted to thoroughly enjoying the street food experience and didn't forget to sample a variety of affordable local delicacies. One of the dishes this Western visitor described as a "must-try when visiting Hanoi" is sticky rice with shredded chicken – a delicious and inexpensive breakfast treat for the capital's residents.
To enjoy authentic Hanoi-style sticky rice with toppings, Mark woke up early and headed to a famous sticky rice stall at the intersection of Hang Bai and Ly Thuong Kiet streets. He was excited about the Vietnamese breakfast habit and surprised that even at only 6:30 AM, many food stalls were already packed with customers.
The sticky rice stall that Mark visited is a familiar culinary spot for Hanoi residents, impressing with its harmonious blend of sticky rice, rich lard, smooth mung bean paste, and fried onions. Besides the traditional yellow sticky rice, the stall also serves corn sticky rice with similar ingredients and preparation methods.
In particular, the stall once caused a sensation on Korean television and became famous across social media thanks to the vendor's incredibly fast sticky rice wrapping technique.
When a customer arrives to buy takeout, the owner quickly scoops sticky rice onto a prepared layer of banana leaves, then swiftly slices the finely mashed mung bean paste, which is tightly packed into large pieces. Afterward, they drizzle with rich, fatty oil, add fried onions, shredded pork, and other toppings, then neatly wrap it up.
For customers dining in, sticky rice with toppings is also prepared and served directly in a bowl by the owner, instead of being wrapped in banana leaves and then in newspaper.
In just about 10-15 seconds, this person has prepared 4-5 portions of sticky rice with shredded chicken for many customers. That's why, even though the restaurant is always crowded, no one has to wait long to enjoy it.
Witnessing the owner's incredibly fast and professional preparation of sticky rice with shredded chicken, Mark couldn't help but exclaim in delight. The Western customer immediately ordered two full servings of sticky rice, one corn sticky rice and one shredded chicken sticky rice, to fully experience the flavor of this famous breakfast dish in the capital.
Each serving includes sticky rice, thinly sliced mung beans, rich and savory lard sauce, fragrant golden fried onions, shredded pork floss, and cinnamon-flavored pork sausage.
With its beautiful golden color, Mark commented: "I can't believe how delicious this sticky rice is. The ingredients combine so harmoniously. The rice is still hot and soft, the mung beans are rich and creamy, the fried onions are crispy and fragrant, and the shredded pork melts in your mouth," the American YouTuber with millions of views described.
While enjoying the sticky rice with corn, he couldn't stop praising its deliciousness and was impressed by how skillfully traditional ingredients had been transformed into an appealing breakfast dish. The Western guest also revealed that he particularly liked the smooth, creamy mung bean paste, which had a rich, nutty flavor that melted in his mouth and complemented the sticky rice perfectly.
"Excellent, the sticky rice has a perfect texture. The addition of corn makes it even more nutritious and enough to keep you full all morning," Mark said.
At the end of the meal, Mark paid 15,000 VND per serving for two portions of sticky rice. He admitted that the price was very cheap and affordable for everyone.
Besides sticky rice with shredded chicken, during his trip and culinary experience in Hanoi, the American visitor also took the opportunity to enjoy many other delicious dishes in the capital such as crab noodle soup, grilled pork noodle soup, snail noodle soup, pork rib porridge, etc.
