Since 2020, when the Soi sluice gate was newly built, people in Chi Minh commune have been channeling brackish water from the Thai Binh River into their fields, improving the land to harvest mudworms. Although only a few harvests have been conducted, the mudworm fields in Chi Minh commune yield high productivity, ranging from 55 to 60 kg per sao (approximately 1000 square meters), comparable to mudworms harvested from the riverbanks. Despite the land being recently reclaimed and harvested for only a few seasons, the quality of the mudworms in the fields of Chi Minh City is no less than that of those found in the open areas. After harvesting, the worms are sorted and sold to traders at prices ranging from 250,000 to 300,000 VND per kilogram. Although higher than the market price, worms from Chi Minh commune are still popular with customers. The harvested worms are transported and sold as soon as they are available. Farmers in Chi Minh commune are delighted because the area for harvesting mudworms has expanded, contributing to increased income. Every time the rươi (a type of worm) season arrives, many people come to the rươi-growing area in Chi Minh commune to experience catching rươi. Currently, Chi Minh commune has 160 hectares of mudworm farming in the fields and 140 hectares in the riverside areas. The locality still has room to expand the area for mudworm farming in the fields if there is investment in the irrigation system.THANH CHUNG - NGUYEN MO
