Vietnam's only female dollar billionaire

For many years now, Ms. Nguyen Thi Phuong Thao, Permanent Vice Chairwoman of the Board of Directors of Ho Chi Minh City Development Joint Stock Commercial Bank ( HDBank ), Chairwoman of the Board of Directors of VietJet Aviation Joint Stock Company (Vietjet), Chairwoman and General Director of Sovico Joint Stock Company has consistently held the position of the richest woman in Vietnam. As of the end of the stock trading session on March 7, Ms. Thao still maintained her "throne".

Specifically, with the ownership of a large amount of VJC shares of Vietjet and HDB shares of HDBank, Ms. Thao currently has assets of more than 22,674 billion VND. However, this is the data compiled on the Vietnamese stock market. Based on statistics from Forbes magazine, Ms. Thao's assets are much larger.

Accordingly, at the close of trading on March 7, Ms. Thao was determined by Forbes to have 2.8 billion USD, an increase of 600 million USD after 1 year. Ms. Thao is the second richest person in Vietnam, after Mr. Pham Nhat Vuong, who has 5.6 billion USD. At the same time, Ms. Thao is the 1,292nd richest person in the world .

Forbes has named Thao as Vietnam’s first self-made female billionaire. She took low-cost airline VietJet Air public in 2017, after launching it in 2011 to great success. She has also invested in HDBank and real estate, including hotels and beach resorts.

Female banking billionaire dominates the stock market

Along with Ms. Nguyen Thi Phuong Thao, there are many other female billionaires who own assets worth thousands of billions of VND, even tens of thousands of billions of VND. Notably, in the Top 10 richest female tycoons on the Vietnamese stock market, the banking industry dominates.

Specifically, of the remaining 9 people, 6 own bank shares. They are Ms. Nguyen Thi Thanh Thuy (VND 10,132 billion), Nguyen Thi Thanh Tam (VND 9,664 billion), Ho Thuy Anh (VND 9,565 billion), Hoang Anh Minh (VND 6,289 billion), Vu Thi Quyen (VND 6,273 billion) and Tran Ngoc Lan (VND 5,964 billion).

Ms. Nguyen Thi Thanh Thuy, the third richest woman on the Vietnamese stock market, owns shares in MSN (Masan Group) and TCB (Technological and Commercial Joint Stock Bank – Techcombank). She is the wife of Mr. Ho Hung Anh, Chairman of the Board of Directors of Techcombank.

Ms. Nguyen Thi Thanh Tam, the fourth richest woman on the Vietnamese stock market, is the mother of Mr. Ho Hung Anh. Unlike her daughter-in-law Thanh Thuy, Ms. Thanh Tam only holds TCB shares and does not own MSN shares.

A person related to Mr. Ho Hung Anh also entered the Top 10 richest women on the Vietnamese stock market with the fifth position being Ms. Ho Thuy Anh, daughter of Mr. Ho Hung Anh.

Positions 8, 9 and 10 in the list of the richest women on the Vietnamese stock market belong to “VPBank people”. Thanks to owning a large number of shares of Vietnam Prosperity Joint Stock Commercial Bank, Ms. Hoang Anh Minh, wife of Mr. Ngo Chi Dung, Chairman of the Board of Directors of VPBank, has 6,289 billion VND. Ms. Vu Thi Quyen, mother of Mr. Ngo Chi Dung, is in 9th position.

The “final” position in the Top 10 richest women belongs to Ms. Tran Ngoc Lan. Ms. Lan is identified as a major shareholder of VPBank.

Not as impressive as the banking industry, the real estate industry only has one representative in the Top 10. That is Ms. Pham Thu Huong, Vice Chairwoman of Vingroup Corporation with assets of 7,728 billion VND. Ms. Huong is the 6th richest on the stock market.

However, as VIC shares are on a strong uptrend and the real estate industry benefits from the State Bank's move to reduce operating interest rates, Ms. Huong's position promises to improve significantly in 2025.

The two female tycoons in the manufacturing industry completing the Top 10 are Ms. Vu Thi Hien (VND 12,342 billion) and Ms. Truong Thi Le Khanh (VND 6,724 billion). Ms. Hien, the second richest person on the stock market, is the wife of Mr. Tran Dinh Long, Chairman of the Board of Directors of Hoa Phat Group. Ms. Truong Thi Le Khanh is the Chairman of the Board of Directors of Vinh Hoan Joint Stock Company, a major representative of the seafood industry.
