The new generation Kia Sportage will only have a fuel-efficient hybrid version.

According to leaked information, the 6th generation Kia Sportage is expected to launch in the third quarter of 2027 and will only use a hybrid powertrain, completely eliminating traditional internal combustion engine versions.

The Korean Car Blog, a reputable source from Korea, said that the new generation Kia Sportage will be completely converted to a hybrid configuration. The pure gasoline or diesel versions will be discontinued because they are no longer suitable for the increasingly strict emission and fuel economy standards in the future.

Users of the new Kia Sportage SUV will have two engine options: a conventional hybrid (HEV) and a plug-in hybrid (PHEV). Of which, the PHEV version can achieve a pure electric range of up to 100 km thanks to a larger battery capacity.

The hybrid powertrain on the 6th generation Kia Sportage is said to use new technology, improving both performance and energy consumption compared to the current version. However, Kia is unlikely to develop a pure electric (EV) version of the Sportage.

That’s because EV sales in the segment have been growing more slowly than expected, and Kia already has a competitive EV portfolio, including the EV6. Adding a pure electric Sportage could put the two Korean automakers at odds.

Currently, there are no details about the chassis, interior or exterior of the new Kia Sportage. The current platform of the Sportage may be retained but will undergo significant upgrades. In terms of exterior design, the car is expected to change significantly to match Kia's modern design language.

Meanwhile, the interior of the 2027 Kia Sportage may feature a larger screen, more advanced software systems, and a slightly refined design. However, the possibility of creating an impressive breakthrough in the cabin is not high. The overall size of the car is expected to increase slightly, making the interior space more spacious and comfortable for users.

The Sportage is Kia's best-selling model in North America and Europe and plays a key role in the company's global strategy. In 2024, the SUV sold 587,717 units, accounting for nearly 20% of all Kia vehicles sold worldwide .
