Tran Gia Bao scored a goal at the age of 16 in the V-League.
The V-League 2024-2025 kicked off with 7 very emotional matches and 11 goals (an average of 1.57 goals per match), including a very special goal by young player Tran Gia Bao that sealed a 4-0 victory for HAGL FC against host team Quang Nam .
That goal quickly made Tran Gia Bao famous throughout the country, with the achievement of scoring a goal in Vietnam's top league at the young age of 16 years, 8 months, and 12 days.
Gia Bảo's achievement is outstanding, only falling short of the record set by his senior, Phan Thanh Bình (born November 1, 1986), in the 2003 season when he scored against HAGL in the 6th minute to open his professional career at the age of 16 years, 4 months, and 15 days.
According to Phan Thanh Bình, that was the first time coach Đoàn Minh Xương had selected him to start in his first season as a professional player. Although the team later lost to HAGL 2-3 after goals from Nguyễn Việt Thắng (63rd and 90+2 minutes) and Minh Nghĩa (87th minute), it was a great encouragement for him to work harder in the future.
Coach Phan Thanh Bình hopes Trần Gia Bảo will excel while playing for HAGL.
That goal was extremely significant as, just 6 minutes into the game, he immediately scored against HAGL's "Dream Team," which included Thai stars Kiatisak, Dusit, Taiwan, and a strong lineup of domestic players such as Manh Dung, Van Dan, Duy Quang, and Viet Thang…
This goal helped Phan Thanh Bình set two records: the youngest player to appear and the youngest goalscorer in the national championship, opening the door to a massive career of achievements, culminating in the 2008 AFF Cup championship, and a record four appearances at the SEA Games, including three silver medals in 2003, 2005, and 2009.
Speaking to Thanh Nien Newspaper, Phan Thanh Binh said he was very happy to see Tran Gia Bao shine in the V-League, scoring a goal at the age of 16, just like he did years ago.
He expressed: "When I heard that Gia Bao scored a goal in the V-League 2024-2025, I felt very happy for him personally as well as for the quality of HAGL's young players."
Tran Gia Bao is the latest young talent introduced by HAGL.
From my perspective, I'm very happy for Gia Bao. I feel the same joy and happiness that Gia Bao felt 21 years ago. This is a bright spot for the fans, showing that coach Vu Tien Thanh has faith in the young players.
I also hope Gia Bao stays focused because that's just initial encouragement. Everything is just beginning, Gia Bao has a very long journey ahead. He will have to work even harder to compete in a professional environment, in order to earn another starting spot at HAGL Club."
Another player who opened his V-League account very early was striker Nguyen Cong Thanh (born October 5, 1997, Dong Thap ), who scored against Hai Phong at Lach Tray Stadium in the 2015 V-League when he was only 17 years and 246 days old.
However, Cong Thanh's career was not as smooth as that of his compatriot Phan Thanh Binh, due to Dong Thap football's struggles in the lower leagues. After playing for Ho Chi Minh City FC in the 2021 season, he recently moved to play for Ha Tinh FC.
Mr. Vu Tien Thanh gave advice to his young student after his successful debut.
At the same time, Phan Thanh Bình also sent a heartfelt message to his younger teammate Tran Gia Bao, who is taking professional steps in the colors of HAGL Club, his former team from the 2009-2010 season.
He shared: "Gia Bảo will have to be more patient and persistent in training, try to quickly improve his abilities, always strive and be ready to come off the bench more often, so that one day he can compete for a starting spot."
The reality is that consistently playing in the starting lineup is the true recognition of a professional player's abilities. It will be a long journey, and I hope Gia Bảo will achieve even more success in the future."
Currently, after hanging up his boots and retiring from playing, Phan Thanh Bình is pursuing a coaching career. He is currently a member of Dong Thap Club, which plays in the National First Division League 2024-2025.
I support the VFF and HAGL in allowing Tran Gia Bao to join the Vietnam U.17 national team.
"I believe Tran Gia Bao is perfectly capable of competing with his peers. This will be a great opportunity for him to showcase his talent in the Vietnam U.17 team. I sincerely hope Gia Bao will remain level-headed, disregard the hype, and focus entirely on his professional development," Phan Thanh Binh shared.
