(CT) - On July 21, 2025, Mr. Tran Chi Hung, Vice Chairman of the People's Committee of Can Tho City, along with the Office of the Civil Defense - Disaster Prevention and Search and Rescue Command Board of Can Tho City, visited, encouraged, and provided support to families whose houses were destroyed, had their roofs blown off, or were damaged by thunderstorms in recent days in Trung Nhut ward and Trung Hung commune.

During his visits, Mr. Tran Chi Hung inquired about the well-being of affected families, offered encouragement, and provided financial assistance to help them overcome the consequences of the disaster, rebuild their homes, and quickly stabilize their lives. The Vice Chairman of the People's Committee of Can Tho City also requested local authorities to continue reviewing and compiling statistics on households affected by the natural disaster, reporting to the city for timely support in overcoming the consequences; at the same time, localities need to strengthen inspections and encourage people to reinforce their houses to minimize collapse and roof damage caused by thunderstorms and tornadoes…

The heavy rain and thunderstorm on the evening of July 20th completely destroyed the house of Mr. Tran Thanh Khuya (residing in Thanh Loc 2 area, Trung Nhut ward). The house, measuring 8 meters wide and 8 meters long, had wooden pillars, wooden walls, and a corrugated iron roof. While the natural disaster did not cause any casualties, the collapse of the house has left Mr. Khuya's family without alternative housing. Immediately after the disaster, the Economic , Infrastructure and Urban Planning Department of Trung Nhut ward directed officials to the scene to verify and record the current situation for reporting to relevant city authorities, and to assist the family in cleaning up and arranging damaged belongings.

Mr. Tran Chi Hung, Vice Chairman of the People's Committee of Can Tho City (far right), surveys the scene, visits and encourages households in Trung Hung commune whose houses had their roofs blown off by thunderstorms on the evening of July 20.

In Trung Hung commune, on the evening of July 20th, heavy rain and thunderstorms damaged 5 houses and caused minor injuries to 2 people. The commune's People's Committee mobilized forces to assist residents in overcoming the consequences; at the same time, it coordinated with the Steering Committee for Disaster Prevention, Control and Search and Rescue of Can Tho City to provide 21 million VND to help households repair their houses, mitigate damage, and stabilize their lives. Since the beginning of the year, Trung Hung commune has experienced heavy rain and thunderstorms that damaged 9 houses, with an estimated total damage of 101 million VND. The local authorities have coordinated support of 33 million VND to help residents overcome the damage.

Typhoon No. 3 is currently developing in the northwestern part of the North East Sea. Can Tho City is also affected by the typhoon and should be prepared for heavy rain accompanied by thunderstorms and tornadoes.

According to the Can Tho City Meteorological and Hydrological Station, in the coming days, Can Tho City will experience variable to mostly cloudy skies, intermittent sunshine, and scattered rain, showers, and thunderstorms in the afternoon and evening, with some areas experiencing moderate to heavy rain and strong thunderstorms. Thunderstorms may be accompanied by dangerous weather phenomena such as tornadoes, lightning, and strong gusts of wind, affecting agricultural production and daily life. Rain will be particularly concentrated in the southwestern part of the city. The sea area from Lam Dong to Ca Mau, including the sea area of Can Tho City, will experience showers and thunderstorms; strong southwest winds of level 5, sometimes level 6, gusting to levels 7-8. During thunderstorms, there is a possibility of tornadoes, strong gusts of wind exceeding level 8, and sea waves over 3 meters high.

The Steering Committee for Disaster Prevention, Control, and Search and Rescue of Can Tho City requests that all sectors and levels proactively prevent and respond to Typhoon No. 3 and other unusual weather and natural disaster situations; continue to implement the directives of the Prime Minister on focusing on responding to the risk of heavy rain accompanied by thunderstorms, landslides, flash floods, and proactively preventing and mitigating natural disasters in the coming period; closely monitor the development of the typhoon in the East Sea, prepare ready plans to ensure the safety of people and property; guide fishing vessels to find safe shelters; closely monitor forecasts and warnings of natural disasters, typhoons, and the remnants of Typhoon No. 3 from specialized units to promptly have response plans; proactively prepare forces and means to deploy response, rescue, and recovery work when situations occur; strengthen propaganda and encourage people to limit going out when thunderstorms occur; Reinforce houses to prevent roofs from being blown off or collapsing; trim trees on sidewalks and near houses to prevent them from falling and causing danger; people should avoid working in open fields to prevent lightning strikes…
