Living in a small village in Guizhou, China, this old man would go up the mountain every day to gather medicinal herbs. One day, while lost in the forest, he accidentally discovered a strange object clinging to the trunk of an ancient tree.

It turned out to be a giant mushroom formed from countless smaller mushrooms. This mushroom was 50 cm tall and had a diameter equivalent to an umbrella. The farmer had never seen a mushroom this big in his life, so he decided to take it home.

As soon as he arrived home, a large crowd of villagers gathered to see the mushroom. They all congratulated the old farmer on receiving such a gift from heaven. Many family members advised him to invite an expert to examine the mushroom.

The old farmer invited a botanist from the city to examine the mushroom. Finally, the expert confirmed that the giant mushroom was indeed a rare wild reishi mushroom.

This mushroom is a perennial, with each subsequent layer of fruiting body overlapping the previous one. Because it grows in deep forests, high mountains, and pristine woodlands, the mushroom can sometimes be decades old.

News of a farmer in Guizhou finding a giant reishi mushroom spread throughout the village. Many people from far away came to see it just to get a glimpse of the mushroom. One wealthy businessman even offered to buy it for 1.5 million yuan (over 5 billion VND) upon seeing it. However, the old farmer firmly refused the offer.

Reishi mushrooms, used for medicinal purposes and health protection, have a history of at least 3,000 years. The Japanese and Koreans call reishi "the happy mushroom," "immortal grass," or "fairy grass."

Wild reishi mushrooms typically grow in deep, damp forests and are parasitic on trees. There are hundreds of varieties due to different growing environments and harvesting times. Reishi mushrooms have a 3,000-year history of medicinal use. Among them, the green, yellow, brown, white, black, and purple varieties are considered to have the highest medicinal properties.

According to the "Shen Nong's Materia Medica" from over 2,000 years ago, Reishi mushroom (the king of herbs) is a superior medicine with no side effects and can be used in high doses for extended periods.

Reishi mushrooms are effective in treating several conditions such as angina pectoris, coronary heart disease, unstable blood pressure, bronchitis, rheumatism, chronic hepatitis, menopausal women's diseases, digestive disorders, and diabetes.
