During the resistance war against the US to save the country, Ham Rong - Song Ma bridge had an extremely important strategic position, considered the "choke point" of traffic and became the target of attack by the US air force to prevent support from the Northern rear to the Southern front.

Since the beginning of 1972, in order to save the complete bankruptcy of the "Vietnamization of the war" strategy, the US imperialists have frantically escalated their attacks on the North. They mobilized a large air force and navy to fiercely attack the densely populated areas of Thanh Hoa province, especially the Ham Rong - Song Ma bridge area.

In the rainy season of 1972, the Ma River water level rose, while a few months before, the US had bombarded Ham Rong Bridge, severely damaging the Ma River dike, with a high risk of dike failure and flooding. To ensure the vital traffic route serving the Southern battlefield and to prevent and combat floods, right at the time when US aircraft were bombing fiercely, Thanh Hoa province mobilized emergency forces to build up the critical Ma River dike section from Nam Ngan to Ham Rong.

At the fateful moment, at 8:00 a.m. on June 14, 1972 (ie May 4, Year of the Rat), at the Ma River dike construction site, about 1km from Ham Rong Bridge, the force present at the construction site was more than 2,000 workers (including teachers and students of the Medical School, Thanh Hoa 7+3 Pedagogical School), when American planes suddenly appeared and dropped bombs, turning the construction site into a battlefield.

Nearly an hour after the sound of bombs and bullets stopped, the sky was filled with nothing but black smoke and a burning smell, after 24 series of bombs that stretched for kilometers like a hurricane, causing many people to die on the spot, many people who entered the shelter also died because the bombs fell on the shelter or were injured by the pressure of the bombs and bullets...
