Production linkage according to value chain in Dong Giang: Not as expected

On February 8 (January 11), Huong Son Deer Antler Investment and Development Cooperative (Huong Son district, Ha Tinh ) went to Dong Giang to buy deer antlers from sika deer farmers in the area.

The unit in charge of the project linking production according to the value chain of raising sika deer for antlers continues to guide people on techniques for caring for and preparing food for deer. On this occasion, Mrs. Dinh Thi Tot's household (Dha Mi village, Ba commune) cut a total of 1.5 kg of antlers to sell to the cooperative at the price of grade 1 of 12 million VND/kg.

Mr. A Vo To Phuong - Chairman of Dong Giang District People's Committee said that sika deer is an easy animal to raise because its main food is leaves and fruits available around. Sika deer eat little, the food to raise 6 deer is enough to raise a cow.

Currently, deer are widely raised in some provinces, typically Ha Tinh, which has helped many households increase their income and sustainably reduce poverty. Learning from the reality and experience in the locality, Dong Giang calls on businesses and cooperatives to take the lead in participating in the project of linking up deer farming. In 2024, the project supported 45 households to raise 225 deer (135 males), now many of which have velvet antlers, creating confidence and excitement for the people.

Recently, cinnamon planting projects (initial scale 422.7ha) have been formed in Dong Giang. The type planted is Yen Bai high-yield cinnamon, the longer it is planted, the higher the economic value, in the 5th year it has started to generate income from thinning to collect leaves and thin bark to cook essential oil.

The joint project gives an average revenue of 1 hectare of cinnamon in a 10-year cycle of about 1 billion VND (calculated at the lowest price); minus costs, the profit will be nearly 75 million VND/ha/year, much higher than growing acacia (1 hectare of acacia in a 5-year cycle will reach 6 million VND/ha/year).

According to statistics, Dong Giang is implementing 21 value chain production linkage projects such as black pigs, cows, spotted deer, cinnamon, jackfruit, morinda officinalis, and durian with the participation of thousands of households.

Participating households are provided with technical support, quality seedlings and guaranteed product consumption. Successfully implemented projects will bring sustainable income to the participating parties.

The results are not as expected.

Dong Giang has focused on integrating capital from national target programs and provincial policies to implement value chain production linkage projects. The results are only initial, many expectations have not been met as expected.

According to Mr. A Vo To Phuong, it is undeniable that most people have changed their way of thinking, working and actively participating in the chain, typically raising black pigs, sika deer for antlers, growing Morinda officinalis, durian, red-fleshed jackfruit... However, there are still households that do not have the will to escape poverty.

For example, the cinnamon growing chain has been carefully prepared in terms of plans, with propaganda and mobilization on socio-economic efficiency, consumption markets, and product development scale, but many people refuse to change their farming practices and stick with acacia trees.

Therefore, the goal of increasing the cinnamon growing area to at least 2,500 hectares by 2025 and about 4,000 hectares by 2030 to form a large enough raw material area to build a brand, position, and attract investment in deep processing (a processing factory with a capacity of 1,000 tons of fresh cinnamon/year needs a raw material area of ​​about 300 - 500 hectares/year) is very difficult to achieve.

According to the assessment of Dong Giang agricultural sector, the shift in crop structure from rice production dependent on rainwater to high-value crops, acacia trees to timber and fruit trees is progressing slowly.

Consumption linkages between enterprises, cooperatives and people are still limited. Garden economic development has not yet created a vibrant and widespread movement throughout the district. The number of enterprises participating in agricultural product consumption linkage contracts is small and small-scale; some value chains implemented in the initial stages are of low quality.

In addition, the methods of propaganda and mobilization in some places are still monotonous, not close to the customs, culture and reality of each subject. Another factor that has a significant impact on the effective implementation of some linkage chains is the terrain and unfavorable weather. Livestock diseases are complicated and unpredictable, easily leading to loss if the response is subjective.

In the coming time, Dong Giang will continue to promote propaganda work, change people's awareness. Promote the role of community agricultural extension groups, promote production linkages associated with processing and consumption, develop key product groups with advantages of the district and meet the product needs of society. Focus on building model gardens as places to visit, learn from experiences, and replicate...
