Criminal impersonating police

On May 5, 2023, Lienvietpostbank Dak Lak received a request from customer T.Th.H, 66 years old, to close three savings accounts worth over 400 million VND before maturity. Noticing the customer's confusion and anxiety, bank staff advised her to retain the savings to protect her interests. After hours of analysis and persuasion by bank staff, the customer realized she had "almost" fallen victim to a large-scale fraud. Customer T.Th.H stated that she had been contacted by multiple individuals using different phone numbers, posing as police officers, inspectors, and ministers, demanding money to clear her name in a money laundering case she was involved in. During the scam, the perpetrators instructed her not to disclose any information to anyone and to rent a hotel room for private conversations. Thanks to timely and decisive action, Lienvietpostbank Dak Lak successfully protected nearly half a billion VND for its customers.

Who are the usual victims?

The common point of many fraud cases impersonating police officers is that the scammers often target the elderly, women, gullible people and those lacking knowledge of the law.

Also in May, Lienvietpostbank Thai Binh branch, in coordination with the Thai Binh Provincial Police, successfully thwarted a phone scam. On May 8th, Mr. MVN (from Vu Phuc commune, Thai Binh city) went to the Lienvietpostbank Thai Binh branch to request early withdrawal of four savings passbooks totaling 535 million VND. During the transaction, he exhibited unusual behavior, such as anxiety and constantly urging bank staff to complete the transaction quickly so that the money could be transferred to an account at another bank. After explanation and persuasion, Mr. MVN shared that he had been repeatedly threatened by an individual claiming to be a Thai Binh Provincial Police officer named Tuan Anh, demanding that he transfer money before 5 PM that day to exonerate a drug trafficking and money laundering ring. Immediately, the branch leadership contacted the Thai Binh Provincial Police to coordinate the verification of the information. After working with the police, Mr. MVN calmed down and stopped all transactions related to closing his savings account.

Less than a day later, a scam with an identical scenario occurred at Lienvietpostbank in Bac Tra My district, Quang Nam province. On May 9, 2023, Mrs. Huynh T. Th. went to the bank to transfer 220 million VND. She brought several suspicious handwritten notes and answered the teller's questions inconsistently and hesitantly. Suspecting she was being scammed, the bank staff advised her about sophisticated scams and contacted her family to verify the information. When Mrs. Th.'s family arrived, they were shocked to find her trying to transfer 220 million VND to a stranger. This person claimed to be a police officer and said that Mrs. Th. was involved in money laundering, demanding that she transfer the money to them.

Lienvietpostbank enhances vigilance and combats crime.

To protect the rights of its customers, Lienvietpostbank branches nationwide have continuously warned against and successfully prevented numerous cases of fraud and impersonation aimed at misappropriating assets. When receiving calls from individuals claiming to be government officials or police officers informing or requesting investigations into cases, Lienvietpostbank advises the public:

LienVietPostBank continuously thwarts numerous fraud cases amounting to billions of dong (Figure 1).

Lienvietpostbank commits to continuously raise vigilance and fight against crime; all customers who come to transact at the Bank will have their rights protected to the highest level.
