Missed high school graduation exam because of dengue fever

VnExpressVnExpress30/06/2023

Ho Chi Minh City – An 18-year-old male student with severe dengue fever had to be hospitalized for 7 days, missing his high school graduation exam, and received free treatment from doctors at Cho Ray Hospital.

The male student developed symptoms of a high fever exceeding 39 degrees Celsius, which did not subside even after taking fever-reducing medication. The next day, his family called the exam health hotline at Cho Ray Hospital for assistance to exam candidates. The doctor advised him to drink plenty of water, take fever-reducing medication, and monitor his condition for a day. However, the patient continued to have a high fever and general muscle aches, prompting the doctor to order emergency hospitalization on June 24th.

Dr. Nguyen Thi Thuy Ngan, Deputy Head of the Department of Tropical Diseases, said that the treatment team made every effort to save the young man, hoping he would recover well enough to take the high school graduation exam (held on June 28-29). Unfortunately, the patient's platelet count dropped rapidly, preventing him from being discharged to take the exam because he could bleed at any time, and failure to treat it promptly could be dangerous.

Despite missing the high school graduation exam, the patient overcame the critical stage of the disease and recovered, being discharged from the hospital on June 30th. "Three years of hard studying, not being able to take the exam was very sad, but for his health, we had to accept it. Fortunately, my son is progressing well," the patient's father said.

All examination and treatment costs, excluding those covered by health insurance, are completely waived by the hospital as part of the pre-exam, pre-exam, and post-exam health support program launched by Cho Ray Hospital on June 17th. The program also includes a remote consultation hotline and 10 emergency teams to assist candidates with health issues requiring home care or hospitalization.

Doctors advise that people with a fever lasting 2-3 days or more may have dengue fever and should go to the hospital for examination and treatment. Note that one of the signs of worsening condition is increased discomfort even when the fever subsides or disappears, inability to eat or drink, and frequent vomiting. In addition, other signs that require immediate medical attention include increased abdominal pain; cold, clammy hands and feet; extreme fatigue and restlessness; bleeding from the nose, mouth, or unusual vaginal bleeding, vomiting blood, passing black or red stools; behavioral changes such as confusion, irritability, restlessness, or lethargy; and not urinating for more than 6 hours.

Ho Chi Minh City recorded nearly 8,300 dengue fever cases in the first six months of the year, 53% lower than the same period last year, but the number of cases has increased rapidly recently. People should pay attention to eliminating mosquitoes and larvae, and sleep under mosquito nets even during the day to prevent the disease.
