Following the ban, Apple released a statement listing the apps that were banned and removed from its App Store. Notably, Apple not only removed TikTok but also several other apps owned by the Chinese company ByteDance - TikTok's parent company.
TikTok and many ByteDance apps cannot be found on the US App Store
The list of apps removed from the App Store includes TikTok, TikTok Studio, TikTok Shop Seller Center, CapCut, Lemon8, Hypic, Lark - Team Collaboration, Lark - Rooms Display, Lark Rooms Controller, Gauth: AI Study Companion, and Marvel Snap. Many of these apps are quite popular.
Tourists to the US can't use TikTok either
In an accompanying document, Apple said that the company complied with applicable laws and regulations, so it blocked all of the above apps. In a statement, Apple said: "Apple is required to comply with the laws of the jurisdictions where it operates. In accordance with the Protect Americans Act, apps developed by ByteDance and its subsidiaries, including TikTok, CapCut, Lemon8, and others, will no longer be available for download or update on the App Store for U.S. users starting January 19, 2025."
Additionally, Apple announced that travelers from other countries to the US will not be able to update or make purchases from ByteDance apps, meaning travelers will not be able to fully interact with ByteDance services until they leave the US.
