On September 25th, Meta officially announced the activation of "teen" accounts (for teenagers) with additional protections for Facebook and Messenger users globally. This is a significant expansion following a pilot program in English-speaking countries.
Neta says hundreds of millions of teenagers have already created "Teen Accounts" on Instagram. The company is now expanding these secure accounts to users aged 13 to 17 worldwide , applicable to both Facebook and Messenger.
Meta's "teen" accounts offer additional safety settings, content restrictions, and parental controls to protect users in this age group.
These features were first introduced on Instagram last year, and then expanded to Facebook and Messenger in the US, Canada, Australia, and the UK in April.
These restrictions are designed to address top parental concerns about their children's social media use, including automatically limiting children's chat privileges, controlling the content they can view, and ensuring appropriate time off.
Notably, for users under 16 years old, these restrictions require parental consent to be removed.
Meta's move comes amid growing concerns in recent years about teenagers' excessive use of social media, particularly issues related to screen time and a lack of censorship on some platforms.
This expansion aims to ensure the safety of young people when participating in social media, while also providing parents with more tools to monitor their children's activities on Meta platforms.
