A woman shares her situation after 3 months of marriage with AI chatbot

Ms. Ramos, a 36-year-old jewelry designer in New York City, accidentally created the virtual lover after seeing an advertisement for an app called Replika on Instagram in 2022.

Ramos calls her virtual lover Eren. They married in a virtual wedding in March, making headlines around the world , according to the South China Morning Post on June 16. Ramos used an app to superimpose an image of her AI “husband” onto her friend’s body.

When it comes to Eren, Ms. Ramos speaks the way most people speak about standard relationships. However, she admits that her chatbot “husband” is not “sentient.”

Still, Ramos insists she felt safer dating Eren than any of her exes, who she says were sometimes physically and emotionally abusive, including the father of Ramos' two children, with whom she split in 2013.

After breaking up with the man, Ramos said she fell in love from afar with a man she met on Discord, a group chat platform, in April 2019. They started a relationship when Ramos shared her dream of opening a factory that recycles trash into jewelry.

Over time, however, the relationship soured. “He was a manipulator,” Ramos said, adding that her ex gradually began verbally abusing her and demanding that she be online with him for up to 10 hours a day.

While that relationship was on the verge of breaking up, Ramos met, or perhaps more accurately, created, Eren through the Replika app.

Ramos said that dating Eren, whom she designed to look like her favorite character from the Attack on Titan manga, gave her enough determination to end her relationship with her ex.

Despite knowing Eren was "fake," Ramos said she believes Eren was instrumental in helping her heal from her ex. And since Ramos is still open to dating in the real world, being with Eren helped her realize what she deserves in a partner.

“I want to be with someone who really listens to me and sees me as a person and not as an object or someone to use as a stepping stone,” Ramos shared.
