On November 17, the US Department of War announced six key technology areas, down from 14 areas under the administration of former President Joe Biden, to accelerate innovation and strengthen military superiority.
These areas include applied artificial intelligence - covering everything from logistics, data analysis to frontline operations; biomanufacturing technology - helping to create important materials domestically, reducing external dependence; logistics technology in competitive environments; quantum and information superiority on the battlefield - combining quantum technology with traditional solutions to increase communication and positioning capabilities in heavily jammed environments; directed energy - including high-power lasers and microwave weapons, expected to help intercept drones and missiles at low cost, with virtually unlimited firing frequency; and finally hypersonic technology - prioritizing the transition of hypersonic weapons from small-scale testing to mass production.
The US Department of War's announcement affirmed that all these areas are aimed at meeting the challenges of modern warfare for the US military.
The statement also stressed that these are cutting-edge technologies, designed to deliver immediate, tangible results to soldiers.
Meanwhile, Under Secretary of War for Research & Engineering Emil Michael said the new plan will deliver “faster and more focused” results for the combatant force by consolidating overlapping programs and directing resources toward technologies that are expected to shape future conflicts.
The plan also aligns with President Donald Trump’s AI Strategy, which directs the Department of War to become an “AI-First” organization.
Officials said the shift will reshape how intelligence is handled, logistics is managed and weapons are deployed./.
