According to CNN, the US military has dropped the first batch of aid into the Gaza Strip, opening an emergency humanitarian aid wave under the direction of President Joe Biden.
Three C-130 aircraft of the US Central Command (CENTCOM) dropped 66 cargo planes containing about 38,000 meals onto the southwestern Gaza beach, along the strip's Mediterranean coast.
The aid drop is being coordinated with the Royal Jordanian Air Force. Other countries such as Egypt and France are also airdropping aid into Gaza.
Earlier, on March 1, President Biden announced that the US would drop aid into Gaza for the first time. This announcement was made a day after a shooting that killed at least 100 Palestinians while waiting in line to receive aid in the northern Gaza area.
The United States and several other countries are currently considering the possibility of establishing a maritime corridor from Cyprus to the Gaza Strip to deliver international humanitarian aid to people affected by the conflict.
The Gaza Strip is facing an unprecedented humanitarian crisis. According to the United Nations, the total volume of humanitarian aid entering Gaza in February decreased by 50% compared to January. At least 576,000 people in the Gaza Strip - equivalent to 25% of the population - are on the brink of starvation.
