According to CNN, the US military has dropped the first shipment of aid into the Gaza Strip, marking the beginning of an emergency humanitarian aid operation ordered by President Joe Biden.
Three C-130 aircraft from the US Central Command (CENTCOM) dropped 66 packages containing approximately 38,000 meals onto a beach in southwestern Gaza, along the Mediterranean coast of the strip.
The aid drop was carried out in coordination with the Royal Jordanian Air Force. Other countries such as Egypt and France are also conducting aid drops into Gaza.
Earlier, on March 1st, President Biden announced that the United States would drop humanitarian aid into Gaza for the first time. This announcement came a day after a shooting incident killed at least 100 Palestinians who were queuing for aid in northern Gaza.
The United States and several other countries are currently considering the possibility of establishing a sea corridor from the Republic of Cyprus to the Gaza Strip to deliver international humanitarian aid to people affected by the conflict.
The Gaza Strip is facing an unprecedented humanitarian crisis. According to the United Nations, the total volume of humanitarian aid into Gaza in February decreased by 50% compared to January. At least 576,000 people in the Gaza Strip – equivalent to 25% of the population – are on the brink of starvation.
