Optimizing capacity, building an international standard airport

After a period of continuous operation, infrastructure items such as runways, taxiways, drainage systems and signal lights have begun to deteriorate, affecting operational efficiency and flight safety. This poses an urgent need for comprehensive upgrades to ensure safety, optimize capacity and prepare for a new development appearance after being recognized as an international airport in June 2024.

Vietnam Airports Corporation (ACV) has officially announced that it will launch the flight route upgrade project, part of the overall adjustment of Lien Khuong Airport planning for the period 2021 - 2030, with a vision to 2050. The project is a step to upgrade Lien Khuong Airport to become a more modern and standard international airport, a gateway connecting the vital traffic of the Central Highlands with economic and tourist centers at home and abroad.

The Lien Khuong Airport Upgrade Project is being implemented with a large and synchronous investment capital in each item. The repair phase of the existing runway, landing and taxiway will start in March 2026. ACV said it will invest VND966.8 billion to replace the entire runway surface, 3,250 m long and 45 m wide. Along with that, the drainage system, technical infrastructure and equipment to ensure flight operations will also be thoroughly renovated and upgraded. At the same time, about VND3,700 billion will be invested to build a new T2 passenger terminal and other synchronous items. Terminal T2 will not only bring a spacious and modern appearance but also significantly increase service capacity.

Opportunities for socio-economic development

Lien Khuong is the first international airport in the Central Highlands. Along with being recognized as an international airport, according to the plan until 2030, Lien Khuong will be upgraded to level 4E - the highest level in Vietnam today. With this level, the airport will be able to operate modern wide-body aircraft such as Boeing 787, Airbus A350, enhancing its competitiveness and reputation on the international aviation map.

In a recent working session with Lam Dong province leaders, Mr. Vu The Phiet - Chairman of the Board of Directors of Vietnam Airports Corporation emphasized: "Lien Khuong Airport is one of the airports that has been planned and will be synchronously deployed with solutions to upgrade infrastructure, build policies for long-term development. Thereby, creating favorable conditions for people to travel, promoting international cooperation, developing tourism economy, creating momentum for socio-economic development, ensuring national defense and security".

ACV leaders also said that from the current average of 2.5 million passengers/year, Lien Khuong's capacity is expected to increase to 5 million passengers and 20,000 tons of cargo per year by 2030. In particular, by 2050, the airport can serve up to 7 million passengers and 30,000 tons of cargo, ready to welcome the expected growth rate of 10% per year.

Upgrading to an international airport will create a bigger boost, attract more international flights, diversify the passenger market, and consolidate its position as a key airport in the region, especially when Lam Dong completes the expressways in the near future.
