Coach Jose Mourinho and Benfica face a challenging away match at St James' Park against Newcastle in the third round of the 2025/26 Champions League group stage.

Immediately after the opening whistle, both teams started the match with great enthusiasm, exchanging attacks. After several missed opportunities, the home team finally took the lead in the 32nd minute thanks to a precise finish from Anthony Gordon.

This goal made the game more exciting, but despite many shots, Benfica still could not beat goalkeeper Nick Pope, who continuously made excellent saves.

In the second half, the Portuguese team gradually ran out of steam, while Newcastle maintained strong pressure and completely dominated the match.

In the 70th minute, Harvey Barnes doubled the lead with a decisive shot inside the penalty area, after the Benfica defense left a gap.

In the 83rd minute, Barnes completed his brace, this time from a sublime assist by Gordon – widely considered the star of the match.

In the end, Newcastle secured a convincing 3-0 victory against Benfica, temporarily moving them to the top of the table. Meanwhile, Mourinho's team continues to struggle in the race for qualification in the Champions League.
