Hours before Russian President Vladimir Putin made an official visit to North Korea, North Korean state media published an editorial in which President Putin said the two countries would work closely to overcome US-led sanctions. This is the first visit by a Russian head of state to North Korea in 24 years.
The commentary in North Korean state media also said that President Vladimir Putin appreciated North Korea's unwavering support for Russia's special military operation in Ukraine. The Russian president affirmed that Russia and North Korea firmly oppose the West's ambition to obstruct the establishment of a multipolar world order based on mutual respect.
According to Tass, President Vladimir Putin pledged that Russia and North Korea will jointly build a security structure in Eurasia, counter Western sanctions and establish independent trading systems. “We are ready to work closely together to bring more democracy and stability to international relations. To do this, we will develop trade mechanisms that are not controlled by the West, jointly oppose illegal unilateral restrictions and shape an equal structure,” Putin said.
North Korea is under heavy economic sanctions imposed by the United Nations Security Council over its nuclear weapons and missile programs. Mr Putin said Russia and North Korea would also expand cooperation in tourism, culture and education.
Russia-North Korea relations have expanded in many areas since North Korean leader Kim Jong Un visited Russia's Far East in September 2023 to meet with Russian President Vladimir Putin. In March this year, Russia used its veto power at the United Nations Security Council to end monitoring of UN sanctions against North Korea over its nuclear program.
