Earlier, on the afternoon of July 27, information spread on social media about the collapse of the Ban Ve hydroelectric reservoir. This information quickly spread, causing public panic. Some people downstream of the Lam River were worried and ran to Khe Chi hill to avoid rising floodwaters.
Mr. Nguyen Truong Thanh, Head of the Nghe An Province Irrigation Department, confirmed that the information about the Ban Ve Hydropower Dam breaking was incorrect and untrue. At the same time, Mr. Thanh also provided some live photos of the Ban Ve Hydropower Plant, the dam items, the reservoir and the operation of this hydropower plant that takes place on a normal day.
Authorities also requested law enforcement agencies to track down those who spread false rumors, causing public panic, and handle them strictly.
Ban Ve Hydropower Plant, with a designed capacity of 320MW, is the largest hydropower plant in the North Central region, located in Yen Na commune. Ban Ve Hydropower Reservoir has a dam length of 509m at the top, a maximum dam height of 137m, a normal water level of 200m, a reservoir capacity of 1.8 billion m3, and a reservoir basin area of 8,700 km2.
