According to the New York Times on April 26, Elon Musk's close advisor, Jared Birchall, secretly established three companies in Texas called Red Planet 1, 2, and 3 on February 25. This is a move that has never been announced before.
The move comes as Musk prepares to step down from his position at the Office of Government Efficiency (DOGE) in May to focus on saving Tesla, keeping SpaceX afloat, and crafting a new strategy for xAI, which Musk has just merged into social network X.
According to the New York Times, the filings show that Jared Birchall is listed as the manager of all three new companies. The companies are registered in Austin, Texas — a location commonly used for Elon Musk’s other businesses.
Notably, when Mr. Musk acquired Twitter in 2022, he also established three companies named X Holdings 1, 2 and 3 to serve this deal.
Birchall has yet to comment on the creation of Red Planet 1, 2, and 3, but according to the New York Times, Birchall's legal actions rarely take place without direct direction from Musk.
According to the New York Times, the use of the name "Red Planet" is not a coincidence in Mr. Musk's thinking, as this billionaire has repeatedly affirmed his ambition to turn SpaceX into a pioneer in bringing humans to Mars.
Last month, Mr. Musk also announced that SpaceX could send an unmanned expedition to Mars by the end of 2026 and predicted the possibility of a human landing on the planet as early as 2029.
According to the New York Times, Red Planet is how Mr. Musk often calls Mars, for example in 2020 he wrote on X that "Technology needs to develop faster, otherwise there will be no cities on Red Planet (Mars) in our generation".
In a related development, John Spencer - founder of Red Planet Ventures in California since 2001, the company with the same name as the 3 new companies that Mr. Musk's close advisor just registered - said he knew Mr. Elon Musk.
Mr. Spencer told the New York Times that he was among a group of friends who introduced Mr. Musk to Gwynne Shotwell, now the CEO of SpaceX.
When asked about Mr. Musk's creation of companies called Red Planet, Mr. Spencer gently commented that there might be a "name issue" later, while also expressing curiosity about the Red Planet companies of the richest man on the planet.
