Man stung more than 30 times by wasps, falls into coma, multiple organ failure

After being stung more than 30 times by wasps, a man in Da Nang City (formerly Quang Nam Province) fell into a coma and suffered multiple organ failure due to grade 3 anaphylactic shock.

On July 2, Quang Nam Central General Hospital (located in Nui Thanh commune, Da Nang city) announced that the unit had just successfully treated a patient in critical condition with grade 3 anaphylactic shock due to dozens of wasp stings.

After 5 days of monitoring and intensive treatment, the patient was conscious, breathing on his own and the endotracheal tube was removed. On July 1, the patient was transferred to the Tropical Diseases Department for further monitoring.

Previously, at 3:30 p.m. on June 26, Mr. NTD (68 years old, in Duc Phu commune, Da Nang city) was taken to the emergency room by his family in a state of swollen face, convulsions, difficulty breathing, chest pain...

After examination, the doctor determined that Mr. D. was in severe anaphylactic shock with more than 30 bee stings, mainly on the head, face and hands.

The patient was given anti-shock drugs, intravenous fluids, oxygen, and close monitoring of vital signs. However, his condition quickly deteriorated and he fell into a coma and respiratory failure.

Immediately afterwards, Mr. D. was transferred to the Intensive Care - Anti-Poison Department for endotracheal intubation, intravenous fluids, vasopressor drugs and intensive treatment.

Here, the doctor noted that the patient had symptoms of heart failure, acute kidney failure, and severe rhabdomyolysis syndrome leading to electrolyte disturbances, threatening his life. The hospital performed continuous blood filtration combined with adsorption filtration to remove toxins caused by bee venom.

Unfortunately disturbed the hornet's nest and was stung and passed out on the spot.

According to Mr. D's family, while cutting down a tree behind the house, Mr. D accidentally disturbed a wasp nest and was stung by many bees, causing him to faint on the spot.

Doctor Vu Phan Thien An, Department of Intensive Care - Anti-Poison, warns that anaphylactic shock due to bee stings will progress very quickly, within just a few minutes it can lead to cardiac arrest, respiratory arrest. Therefore, people who are stung by bees or have signs of severe allergies such as difficulty breathing, swelling of the sting site, dizziness should go to the nearest medical facility for timely treatment.
